Coping With Change Presented by The Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives

Change your thinking... change your life - Ernest Holmes The past cannot be changed, but the future is whatever you want it to be - Paula What you think about is what you become - Earl Nightingale CHANGE

The Only Constant In Our World Today Is Change Do you resist or accept change? Most of us naturally dislike change Denial is not good The Worst Kinds of Change

Recognition Of Change Different Personalities Develop When Faced With Change

Facing Your Fears Realize Change Causes Different Feelings For Different Workers Know How Your Employee Will Handle The Change. Do They Require More Information To Feel Comfortable?

Adjustment Time Workers May Need Time Workers May Need to Seek Help Dealing With Change

Expect Stress Do You Know What Types of Personalities You Have Working For You? Can You Adjust To Each Personality?

Choose How You React It May Be All You Can Do As An Employee You May Need To Work Hard At Getting Over A Stressful Change.

Be Positive If At All Possible If you can’t find the positive immediately, think about the future.

Staff Changes In The Workplace The New Boss

Staff Changes In The Workplace The New Employee (The “Bob” From Account Temps)

CO-WORKER CHANGE FRIEND OR ENEMY? A Straightforward Approach Rather Than A Long Drug Out Grudge.

CHANGE THE LOSS OF YOUR JOB Build Yourself Back Exercise

CHANGE TO BUILD A WINNING TEAM Clear Goals In touch with what is going on outside the team Small but can still master the process Have complementary skills Value Input, regardless of rank Can overcome conflict Supportive of each other Celebrate their success

WHAT CHANGES MAKE A LOSING TEAM Bring only people they like together Focus more on the team itself than the outcome Too small or large in size Lack needed skill tasks Do not train on capabilities Accept ideas only from superiors Fighting, conflicts are common Avoid fights, conflict Do not support each other Ignore the need for individual recognition

HARD BARRIERS THAT KEEP US FROM CHANGING TO A WINNING TEAM Hard barriers from being a winning team include: IT problems, resource problems, legal obstacles Soft barriers include: individual resistance, group resistance, external resistance.

OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO GOOD CHANGE Overcoming the barriers to change includes leadership training/coaching for middle managers and working with staff and manager resistance to convert that energy into a positive force instead of a negative force

WHY WORKERS RESIST CHANGE A desire not to lose something of value A misunderstanding of the change and its implications A belief that the change does not make sense in the organization, and A low tolerance for change.
