Bell Ringer: Please follow entering procedures. Please get your computer and turn in any homework. Then answer this question in your bell ringer section: What are three words you would use to describe Cookie? Why? Three sentences, 3 minutes.

* Learning Goal: The concept of heroes in literature * Essential Question: How does the characterization of the hero or villain impact how readers interpret them?

* Characterization: a description or representation of something or someone. * Character trait: a particular word used to describe someone. Usually defended with an example. (MUST be defended with an example in Comm Arts.) * Example: Mrs.Thompson is positive because she always tries to be excited about class and smiles, a lot!

* What are heroes and villains? What character trait might you give each? (2 minutes) * Today we will read “The Hero’s Test”. It is the first story with both a hero AND a villain.

* Words to Know: * Protagonist * Antagonist-an opponent of the protagonist or hero. * Minotaur-mythical creature * Labyrinth- elaborate maze. * Minor character-in the background, not the star.

* I will read the first three pages for you starting on page 26. While you are reading please think about how you would characterize some of the characters. I will model for you how to characterize as we read and discuss with you your own characterizations.

Name of character Type of character Character Trait Example of character trait Mood this character trait creates within me TheseusProtagonist or hero BraveHe is brave because he faced the Minotaur and killed him to save his people.
