Exodus: Our Rescuing God 6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us. 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.”

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly. 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.”

Exodus: Our Rescuing God 22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.”

Fearing God 17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do…

Fearing God What does it mean to ‘fear God’? …since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:28-29)

Fearing God What does it mean to ‘fear God’? Hebrew yawray = to fear or revere = to hold in respectful awe = reverential trust

Fearing God It’s the path of wisdom! The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom… (Psalm 111:10) “The fear of the Lord - that is wisdom…” (Job 28:28)

Fearing God It leads to life! The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble. (Proverbs 19:23) The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death. (Proverbs 14:27)

Fearing God It pleases God! The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love. (Psalm 147:11)

Fearing God Where He finds it, God blesses! Blessed are those who fear the LORD! (Psalm 112:1) He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them. (Psalm 145:19)

Fearing God The LORD loves those who fear Him! As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him… As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. (Psalm 103:11 & 13)

Fearing God It’s our source of confidence! In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. (Proverbs 14:26, ESV)

Fearing God It’s a choice we must make! Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD. (Proverbs 23:17)

Fearing God We should desire and pray for it! Teach me Your way, LORD, that I may rely on Your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name. (Psalm 86:11)

Fearing God How do we know we are fearing God? “Be still, and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10)

Do I fear God? Take It Home
