2 Activity NA3: Training and Capacity building The training program has two main objectives: 1)to ensure that the data and metadata to be integrated in the SEADATANET system will be formatted, checked for quality and disseminated according to the common protocols developed in JRA1. 2)to transfer expertise and to train IT experts of the SEADATANET data centers in the basics, installation and operation of the SEADATANET technical components, which are developed in JRA2.

5 IODE: mission statement Established in 1961 ‘to enhance marine research, exploitation and development by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information between participating Member States and by meeting the needs of users for data and information products’

7 Training Tool: ODIMeX OceanTeacher to ODIMeX ( ) = single integrated e-learning and expert system expert and training resources for marine data management and marine information management needed by professional ocean data and information managers and scientists involved in data management; provide ocean researchers and students with the necessary knowledge to interact effectively with their national oceanographic data centres

9 “Digital Library” (resourcekit) “Encyclopedia” that users can browse or search: A range of marine data and information management materials such as descriptive materials, software tools, documents and links to external sources.

11 Courses (training curriculum) A collection of outlines, notes, examples, and miscellaneous documents used in conjunction with the “digital library” to organize training courses in marine data and information training. Courses link extensively to material in “digital library”

12 IODE Project Office The IODE Project Office is a: TRAINING CENTRE: a global training centre for ocean data and information management; CONFERENCE CENTRE: a forum where ocean data and information experts and students can work and meet; DATA AND INFORMATION PORTAL CENTRE: it hosts and maintains IODE’s ocean data and information systems and related public awareness tools; FREE WEBSITE HOST for developing countries who do not have the means to host their own web sites, databases and information bases; TECHNOLOGY TESTBED: a laboratory environment and test bed for new ocean data and information management technology.
