SKILLS FOR LIFE What’s it all about? What’s it got to do with me?

WHAT IS SKILLS FOR LIFE? The Basic Skills Agency defines basic skills as: ‘ The ability to read, write and speak English and use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general.’

BACKGROUND TO SfL POLICY Report by Sir Claus Moser (1999) highlighted the need to reduce the number of adults who struggle with basic skills. ‘one in five adults has less literacy than is expected of an 11 year old child’. ‘about 40% of adults experienced significant numeracy problems’.
