Social Studies Key Issue: To what extent should we embrace nationalism?

Related Issues and General Outcomes Related Issues (based on key issue): 1. To what extent should nation be the foundation of identity? 2. To what extent should national interest be pursued? 3. To what extent should internationalism be pursued? 4. To what extent should individuals and groups in Canada embrace a national identity? General Outcomes (what I will learn according to each related issue) 1. Students will explore the relationships among identity, nation and nationalism. 2. Students will assess impacts of nationalism, ultranationalism and the pursuit of national interest. 3. Students will assess impacts of the pursuit of internationalism in contemporary global affairs. 4. Students will assess strategies for negotiating the complexities of nationalism within the Canadian context.

Specific Outcomes: Explicit components of knowledge and understanding that are contained within each general outcome. They are building blocks that enable you to achieve the general outcomes for your course Related Issue 1 To what extent should nation be the foundation of identity? General Outcome Students will explore the relationships among identity, nation and nationalism Knowledge and Understanding Students will: 1.5 explore a range of expressions of nationalism 1.6 develop understandings of nation and nationalism (relationship to land, geographic, collective, civic, ethnic, cultural, linguistic, political, spiritual, religious, patriotic) 1.7 analyze the relationship between nation and nation-state 1.8 analyze how the development of nationalism is shaped by historical, geographic, political, economic and social factors (French Revolution and Napoleonic era, contemporary examples)

By the end of this course you should: - Understand the key concepts related to Nationalism - Be ready for grade 12 – we will develop skills and knowledge necessary.

Course Assessment: - will be based on outcomes in the program of studies - will follow diploma model - think of it like we are travelling to destination. You need to know where we are going so you know how to prepare Diploma Exam (50% of course) - 60 m/c – 50 source based 10 plain (50% of exam) - 2 written response (50% of exam) - Source Interpretation (20 %) - Position Paper (30%) 30-2 Diploma Exam (50% of course) - 60 m/c – 50 source based 10 plain (50% of exam) - 3 written response (50% of exam) - Understand and evaluate key course concepts (10%) - Interpretation of Sources and defend a position (20 %) - Explore an issue and defend a position(20%)

Understanding Rubrics Rubrics will be used for all assignments. For diploma assignments, they will model the diploma exam rubrics. We will spend time when necessary to further your understanding of diploma exam rubrics when those writing assignments are given. For other assignments, including exams, they will be similar to the one on the next page. Read the description for the various levels (5, 4, 3, 2, 1). These indicated levels of performance. In a humanities course like Social Studies it’s difficult to quantify tasks like writing, so performance indicators in a rubric help to explain the quality of the work. Feedback will be given to help you understand why you received the score you did and how to improve. Most often this about moving from writing generally, to writing specifically. All outcomes will be assessed more than once to allow you to show growth! Be prepared to work hard in order to achieve!
