CfE Higher Geography INDUCTION

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS  National 5 / Intermediate 2 Grade ”A” or “B” in Geography, or any other Social Subject. English is also very desirable. Higher in any other Social Subject or English. Entry is at the discretion of the Principal Teacher following discussion with pupils, parents, Guidance and House Heads.

COURSE STRUCTURE The course covers THREE UNITS :  Physical Environments  Human Environments  Global Issues

HUMAN ENVIRONMENTS  POPULATION  RURAL  URBAN

GLOBAL ISSUES Development & Health Climate Change

GEOGRAPHICAL SKILLS  Mapping Skills and techniques, including the use of Ordnance Survey Maps  Research skills which should include fieldwork opportunities. Pupils will be familiar with using geographical information which comes from both Primary and Secondary sources.  Use of numerical and graphical data. Students will be familiar with interpreting data, processing it and drawing detailed conclusions.

COURSE ASSESSMENT RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT  This makes up 1/3 of your final course grade!!  It’s worth 30 marks and graded A-D  Personalisation and choice of topic/research questions  A written report must be completed under exam conditions within school (90 minutes)  Marked externally by SQA. EXAMINATION  Worth 66% of final grade (60 marks)and graded A - D  2 hour 15 minute written paper  Marked externally by SQA  Exam has 4 sections each worth 15 marks: Physical Human Global Issues Geographical Skills

MEETING THE STANDARDS…  There will also be a mixture of continuous assessment/end of unit assessments throughout the course to generate evidence of competency in each of the 3 units.  It is essential all units are passed in order to be presented for the final exam. Should any assessments be failed, candidates are allowed one re- sit attempt.  Expect to receive regular homework – a mixture of research tasks, lesson revision, past paper questions and prelim/final exam preparation.  Study support sessions, learner conversations and progress checks can be arranged with the class teacher during the course of the year.
