Building the American Empire

White Man’s Burden Take up the White Man’s burden— Send forth the best ye breed— Go send your sons to exile To serve your captives' need To wait in heavy harness On fluttered folk and wild— Your new-caught, sullen peoples, Half devil and half child Take up the White Man’s burden In patience to abide To veil the threat of terror And check the show of pride; By open speech and simple An hundred times made plain To seek another’s profit And work another’s gain Take up the White Man’s burden— And reap his old reward: The blame of those ye better The hate of those ye guard— The cry of hosts ye humour (Ah slowly) to the light: "Why brought ye us from bondage, “Our loved Egyptian night?” Take up the White Man’s burden- Have done with childish days- The lightly proffered laurel, The easy, ungrudged praise. Comes now, to search your manhood Through all the thankless years, Cold-edged with dear-bought wisdom, The judgment of your peers! Rudyard Kipling 1899 What do you think about Kipling’s challenge? Do you believe he was serious?

Ruling Puerto Rico Military Rule Foraker Act of 1900 made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory, therefore they were not US citizens In the Insular Cases the US Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution did not automatically apply to people in acquired territories First Company of native Puerto Ricans enlisted in the American Colonial Army

Cuba American Occupation initially the US left the officials from the Spanish government in place Those who objected were placed in jail Yet the military provided food and clothing for those in need, built elementary schools, and worked to eradicate yellow fever

US demanded the Cubans include in their Constitution the Platt Amendment which listed restrictions on the Cuban government Their approval effectively made the nation a protectorate-a country whose affairs are partially controlled by a stronger power—of the US

Philippines Emilio Aguinaldo protested the US decision to annex the PI, and led the Filipinos in a guerilla war against US forces The US saw the Philippines as a gateway to Asia

Philippines The US forced Filipinos to live in designated zones where thousands died from poor sanitation, disease, and starvation. General Arthur MacArthur responded with many of the same tactics the US had condemned the Spanish for using in Cuba, Why do you think the US did this?

Philippines William Howard Taft tried to win of the Filipino people by reforming education, transportation, and health care. In 1901 US forces captured Aguinaldo. After nearly three years and 20,000 Philippine deaths, the rebels came to an armistice TAFT on a Caribou

China

John Hay the US Secretary of State issued the Open Door Policy in 1899 which basically stated all nations would have equal access to China preventing any nation from monopolizing trade there. What economic concept was the US pursuing with this policy?

China Boxer Rebellion of 1900 tried to wipe out “foreign devils”. Members of the Society of the Harmonious Fist killed over 200 foreigners August 1900 multinational force smashed the rebellion

Impact US believed its economy was dependent on exports and it had the right to intervene in other countries to make sure markets remained open to US businesses

Impact Anti-Imperialist League included people such as Jane Addams, Andrew Carnegie, Grover Cleveland, and Samuel Clemens. The League opposed the expansion because they believed imperialism violated the credo of republicanism, especially the need for "consent of the governed."
