Lesson 2-4 and 2-5 Multiplication and Division of Integers Lesson 2-4 and 2-5

Multiplication of Integers Negative × Positive = _______________ and Positive × Negative = _______________ If the signs in a multiplication problem are different the solution is:_______________ I know that a: positive × positive = ______________ Now follow the pattern:(+)(–) = ______________ (–)(+) = ______________ (+)(+) = ______________ So…(–)(–) = ______________ I know that a:negative × negative = _________________________ If the signs in a multiplication problem are the same the solution is:_______________ Negative Positive Negative Positive

Here’s a way I can Remember! To remember whether your answer will be positive or negative when MULTIPLYING or DIVIDING, we’ll use: Mr. Multiplivision

When multiplying Integers, cover the Two signs you are using Ex.: 5 (-3) What sign is left uncovered? Negative, - That is the sign of The answer = -15

Grade your teacher’s work… (4)(-7)  (-2) First, (4)(-7) = - 28 Finish it! (-28)  (-2) Answer: 14

1. -8 * 3 Different Signs Negative Answer * -61 Same Signs Positive Answer (-3)(6)(1) (-18)(1) ÷ (-3) (20/-5) - (-4) Start inside ( ) first

Simplify each Expression… - 3 (6y) = -18y -7x (-4y) = 28xy 2n (-6m) (-5p) = 60nmp

Division Good News: It’s not any different! Ex.: -48  (-4) = + 12

Reminder: Remember, a fraction is just a division problem. 

(-56  7)   -7  -6 = 4 = 210 = Try these… -5x y If x = -6 y = -3 = - 10
