University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work Hartford Partnership Program in Aging Education Amy Ambuske DeGurian, LSW Field Education Coordinator

History at Pitt  First cohort in 2005  Offered to the traditional 2-year MSW students (five to start)  Grant funded  Original John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF) grant lasted for 3 years

Evolution  Cohorts across multiple levels  Full-time MSW  Part-time MSW  Advanced standing  BASW (only one of five in the country)  At the end of 10 years, we will have graduated over 100 students.

Operations  Part-time, grant-funded program coordinator (Fine Foundation)  Directed by faculty PI  Dedicated field coordinator  Additional support of the program by gerontology- focused faculty

Sustainability  Average 20 active students in the program at any given time  Approximately 90% of our students receive stipends annually  $70,000–$90,000 in recruited stipend funds per year

Community Partnerships

Thank you!  Amy Ambuske DeGurian, LSW 

The University of Utah College of Social Work HPPAE: Context The University of Utah (UU) College of Social Work (CSW) launched a service arm in 1997, the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program (NHN), to help low-income community-dwelling adults, age 65+, remain independent in their homes and retain their quality of life.

UU CSW HPPAE: History and Evolution  NHN was funded as a HPPAE site by the JAHF  2 nd year MSW students completing their practicums at NHN receive a stipend and tuition waiver (then & now).  In addition to fulfilling basic 2 nd year MSW practicum requirements in NHN, HPPAE students (then & now):  Facilitate Vital Aging Groups in senior centers—Fall semester and Caring Connections Grief Groups—Spring semester  Complete a rotation in a community agency serving adults, age 65+, such as hospice, adult day services, nursing home, local/state government, VA Medical Center  As the primary field instructors, LCSWs at NHN provide weekly group and individual supervision and coordinate students’ learning experiences with community agency instructors and task supervisors (then & now). –

UU CSW HPPAE: Sustainability and Innovation  We continued HPPAE after JAHF funding ended.  We promote the NHN practicum and the Aging Concentration on the CSW website, in MSW application materials, at concentration selection workshops, at practicum fair, and at promotional activities with food.  Our College supports staff and faculty costs associated with the NHN program.  Support for NHN student stipends and client service costs comes from community collaborations and private funders.  We submitted a funding request to the UT Legislature this year to support and expand NHN. Our request wasn’t funded but two Senators championed our cause and plan to resubmit in 2016.

UU CSW HPPAE: Going Strong in 2015  More than 2,700 individuals have been served by our students and community partners since the program began.  Last year, 250 adults 65+ (including 70 couples) received direct care, home repair assistance, and/or referral services.  Funding for stipends from local private foundations helps us be competitive.  We focus on advanced practice gero social work competencies and use the Geriatric Social Work Scale II for pre–post evaluation.  New leadership at the college, at the WD Goodwill Initiatives on Aging, and at NHN as of July 1, 2015, is committed to sustaining and our growing HPPAE Program.,

UU CSW HPPAE: Paying It Forward… Expanding HPPAE to VA/Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Centers (GRECCs)  The JAHF, the VA, the SWLI, and the CSWE Gero-Ed Center partnered to expand HPPAE to VA/GRECCs 2012–2015.  Cohort 1 included Salt Lake City, UT, Madison, WI, and Birmingham, AL. These sites were selected to pilot the model in Fran Wilby and I served as local mentors to the SLC VA/GRECC HPPAE, which is in its 4 th year.  As a national mentor for the VA/GRECC HPPAE collaboration 2012–2015, I have delivered presentations at site-specific orientations and provided phone support to the 15 sites that comprise Cohorts 1-4.

Thank you!  Marilyn Luptak, PhD, MSW 

Boston University School of Social Work Original HPPAE Program  Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) received JAHF funding from  Six, nine and 12 students participated in each of the three HPPAE–funded years  One-year program  Foundation or advanced year students  Clinical or macro majors

BUSSW Model  A primary field placement in an aging setting  A concurrent enrichment experience in a second aging setting for approximately two hours a week for the year  A monthly seminar on important topics in aging  Pre- and posttest competency self-evaluation  Program evaluation  A written reflection piece at the end of the year

Program Evolution  2009 BUSSW sustained the program as a permanent option within MSW Program  Named Lowy-GEM Program in Aging  Existing fund directed to provide small stipends to participating students  Expanded the number of students (27 currently) including several from three off- campus sites and most recently from online program

Program Evolution Continued  Developed advanced leadership program for students wanting a second year in the program (most choose this option).  Single placement in a health or aging setting  Independent project to enhance services to their agencies or the field in general  Compete for a monetary prize  Certificate in Gerontological Social Work

Sustainability  HPPAE sustained in 2009 due to success of program  Availability of existing fund directed to provide stipends to participants  Time allotted to program director  Strong community partners and program alums

Future Goals  Increase participation of online students  Develop an online certificate in aging with related courses for online students  Continue to be innovative and find new ways of introducing students to the field of aging  Continue to update and refine the program
