The flood situation in the district of Thatta Source: UNOSAT, 28 Aug

Overview l Hundreds of thousands of people have moved south from the northern parts of Thatta to seek refugee in the high lands of the area. l The situation in the Thatta district (focus on Makli area) can be described as desperate. l The roads going from Hyderabad towards Makli filled with sporadic settlements and displaced walking along side the highway. l Towards the city of Makli the intensity of people (including traffic) has drastically increased and the entire city and its surroundings is highly populated.

Road to Badin

Overview l Large amount of livestock living amongst the people. l Road towards Badin is cut off (since 3 days) l Security situation deteriorating l No international actors present and only local NGO´s present working on an ad hoc basis, with evacuation support, food, shelter and water distribution. Urgent needs: Shelter, Camp management, Food, Wash, Health.

Input from DCO l The DCO of the district Mr. Manzoor Shaikh describes the situation in the Makli area as desperate, not able to present a total numbers of displaced in the district. l No registration of the IDP´s has been conducted. l The official figure to date is evacuated, however the actual number of displaced is estimated to be much higher (est ). l The DCO was recently assaulted and the situation near the facility is chaotic and aggressive. l The DCO confirms that security situation is deteriorating with continuously reports of looting and thefts in the area.

Input from DCO l The district authority has access to approximately 1500 tents, however, the amount will not be sufficient to meet the influx. l The DCO plans to move the people to the under construction Central Jail building on Ghulamullah Road, process started, approximately 4000 people shifted. l The DCO hinted that the people have to be shifted to organized camps in the town of Jungshahi. Objective is to place them away from the main roads. l The DCO asks for immediate support from the international community based on the urgent need for shelter (organized camp sites, NFI´s), camp management, wash, health and food. l In addition, there is a need for volunteers to augment the current capacity. l Furthermore, the need for management support of livestock is requested since displaced live with their livestock and are reluctant to move into camps.

Shelter l Only a few organized camps managed by NGO´s (NRSP identified) l No registration conducted by DCO l Sporadic settlements in Makli and outskirts l Large amount of livestock Need: Tents, Plastic Sheets and NFI´s (cooking utensils, jerry cans, buckets etc.)

Potential camp site in the Makli Hills l Camps site identified on Makli Hills l Area not optimal (rockie and not flat) l Area closer to city than Jungshahi (i.e access to water and other vital supplies) l Possibility for livestock management
