WELCOME TO THE ROMAN REPUBLIC! -Several groups settled in ancient Italy like the Latins, Etruscans, and Greeks -The Romans learned from these groups -They overthrew an Etruscan king and setup a Republic in which people choose their representatives Etruscan Artwork: The Etruscans taught the Romans art and architecture

WELCOME TO THE ROMAN REPUBLIC! Rome was divided into 2 classes: -Patricians were the upper class citizens of Rome. Had lots of power! (About 10% of population) -Plebeians were the common citizens in Rome. Could not at first hold public office. Served army/paid taxes. Had little power! (About 60% of population)

THE GOVERNMENT NOTES The head of the Roman Republic were 2 Consuls, administrators and military leaders chosen each year Each had the power to veto, or say no to the other. Both had to agree before any law was passed! The Senate was next in importance –300 senators chosen for life to propose laws, handle problems, advise consuls
