Your Logo The Baseball Lot

Your Logo Art was having a bad time in school. The kids didn’t talk with him, and he didn’t know what to say to them. After school, Art would go to the pond to skip stones. An as he skipped them, he said the things he would like to say to Patty. “Patty,” he said to himself one day, “I want you to be my girl friend.” He skipped a stone and looked at it as it sailed almost to the other side of the pond. Then he said, “No, I will never say anything like that to Patty. I would just blush, and I wouldn’t be able to say anything. 8

Your Logo After school one day, Art saw Patty standing on the corned near school. He walked up to her. “Hi, Art,” she said. “Hi,” he said. He breathed in deeply and said, “Can I walk with you?” She smiled and said, “I’m waiting for somebody, Art. Sorry.” “That’s okay,” Art said, and he began to walk down the street. He looked back from time to time. When he was about a block away, he saw Mark Jackson walk up to Patty and begin to walk with her. The next day, one of the kids told him that Mark Jackson was Patty’s boy friend. Mark was one of the most popular boys in school and also one of the smartest. 9

Your Logo Later that day, Art went to the pond and skipped stones. The pond was starting to freeze and the air was cold. “I wish I were a big football player,” Art said to himself. He tossed a stone as far as he could. It went all the way to the other side of the pond. Art smiled. He has never skipped a stone that far before. Then winter came. the winter seemed very long to Art. But at last spring came and the trees started to bud. Now it seemed that the kids paid even less attention to Art. 10

Your Logo “Maybe everybody has other things to think about now,” Art said to himself. And they did. Some of them had motorcycles. Some had bikes. Some had boats. Some had girl friends. And some went out for baseball. The baseball team worked out on a lot near the school. Art passed the lot every day. Sometimes he looked at the team before he went to the pond to skip stones or to the greenhouse to help his dad with the roses. One day, Art stopped on his way home. He was standing next to a boy named Bart. “Hi, Art,” Bart said. “Take a look at this pitcher they’ve got. He can make that ball buzz.” So Art took a look. 11

Your Logo The pitcher seemed to wave his arm around. Then he tossed the ball, and the catcher grabbed it. “Did you see that?” Bart said. “That ball went like a shot.” Art smiled. “Was he trying to make the ball go fast?” Art asked. Bart stared at Art. “What do you mean, trying? He made that ball go so fast, it went like a shot.” Art shook his head. “That wasn’t very fast at all,” he said. Bat folded his arms. “Can you throw it any faster?” “Well, yes I can. I can throw it a lot faster.” “That’s a good one,” Bart said, and started to laugh. 12

Your Logo Then Bart called, “Hey guys, we’ve got somebody who can throw the ball a lot faster than your pitcher. This guy can do it. He told me so.” A lot of other kids began to laugh. Then one of them yelled, “Hey, Coach! Why don’t you let Art here show you how to throw the ball?” Art looked at Bart. “Well, I can throw it faster than that,” Art said. “Okay, he’s ready,” Bart yelled. “He just told me so.” Everybody was laughing. Art didn’t know what to say. He turned around and started to leave. But everybody was yelling, “Come on, Art. The coach want you to give his boys a lesson. Come on.” 13

Determine which happened first, second, and third. _____ One day, Art stopped at the lot to watch the baseball team. _____ Art skipped a stone all the way to the other side of the pond. _____ Art said that he could throw the ball faster than the other pitcher. 14
