Heat from the sun warms up the water in oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds and turns it into water vapour.

Water vapour cools and changes into tiny droplets, forming clouds.

As the clouds get heavy, water falls back to earth as rain or snow.

Some of the rain water is soaked up by the soil and is used by plants and animals.

Some of the rain water collects in lakes or rivers, which take it back to the sea. The cycle starts all over again.
