Presentation transcript:

Look at the pictures to the left. What type of energy is being displayed for each picture? Look at picture number 4. What do you think is happening in that picture?

What is an Energy Transformation? …. a change from one form of energy to another. the same as an “energy conversion” Any form of energy can be converted into another form of energy.

Potential Energy (energy an object has due to its position) and Kinetic Energy (energy of an object due to its motion) Potential energy can be converted to Kinetic energy and vice versa, ex: roller coasters, skateboarders.

ELASTIC POTENTIAL ENERGY the energy saved in an object that is stressed or compressed. examples: bow & arrow … spring … rubber band These objects store elastic potential energy when they are stretched. As the object is let go and returns to its original shape, it releases stored-up elastic potential energy.

CHEMICAL ENERGY Why is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Chemical Energy from the food you eat gives your body the energy it needs to function. Chemical Energy is converted into: … Kinetic Energy when you are moving around & completing tasks such as running and thinking. … Thermal Energy to help keep your body warm.

OTHER CHEMICAL ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS Chemical energy from a car battery can be converted into mechanical energy to power a car. When natural gas, coal, or petroleum are burned, chemical energy is transformed into thermal energy. Batteries, such as those used in a remote control, can be used to convert the chemical energy in the battery into electrical energy. When fireworks are lit, the chemical energy can be transformed into mechanical & thermal energy.

ENERGY CONVERSIONS IN PLANTS Plants use thermal energy from the sun during photosynthesis to make new substances that have chemical energy.

TRANSFORMATIONS OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY Battery (chemical energy) → electrical energy → Alarm clock (electrical energy) → light energy & sound energy Light bulb (electrical energy) → light energy & thermal energy Blender (electrical energy) → kinetic energy & sound energy

WHY ARE ENERGY CONVERSIONS IMPORTANT? Everything we do involves energy including: Heating or Air-Conditioning your home or school Electricity in your home: Lights … Cooking … TV Getting energy from a meal Transportation: Bikes … Cars … Buses

10-POINT EXIT TICKET: “THINK ABOUT IT”  Look at these energy transformations. 1 thru 4) How the energy is transformed from one type of energy to another type of energy. 5) Draw an illustration of an energy transformation that is not listed to the left. Be sure to explain what is occurring in your illustration
