What is assessment activities? To collect information To make judgments

Two different ways Formal assessmentInformal assessment Assessment tasks tests examinations Teaching and learning activities Homework tasks Purpose Proficiency test Achievement test Progress test Placement test Diagnostic test Feedback for T Feedback for Ss To help T improve procedures or choose different materials or activities for future lessons Marking Learners receive grades (%, A-F, Pass/Fail, etc.) T keeps records but doesn’t give grades. Ss keep records.

Examples—formal assessments Cloze test Gap-fill Jumbled sentences Sentence transformation Multiple-choice True/False/Don’t know Matching Sequencing Summary

Examples—informal assessments Proofreading Information transfer Dictation Summary Guided writing Interview Information gap

The advantage of portfolio Easy to integrate Include whole range of S’s work Provide a wide range of useful information Show how learning is progressing The disadvantage of portfolio: A large amount of marking at any one time & much of them may be subjective

Important tips Test the main things we have taught. For young learners, choose assessment tasks very carefully. Let the learners know we are assessing them in informal assessment. In large classes, we need to assess small numbers of Ss in different lessons. Keep records if informal assessment, especially in larger classes.

Things we have to consider about The size of the class The age of the Ss The knowledge we want to assess The frequency of formal tests or examination
