Driving down the Cost of Motoring Robert Wiseman Energy Saving Trust Fenland Supply Chain Network: Transport and Responsible Purchasing 15 th October 2010

Agenda The challenges The solutions Energy Saving Trust services

The challenge Since 1990, greenhouse gas emissions from domestic transport have increased by 12% and now represent 21% of total UK domestic emissions.

The challenge Travelling by road accounts for 92% of the domestic transport sector’s greenhouse gases

The solution?

Levers to change Advice and information Investment Fiscal Incentive

Smarter driving Choosing efficient vehicles Use the car less Electric/alternative fuel vehicles Energy Saving Trust Services – Delivering Key Messages

Energy Saving Trust working with: Consumers Free advice line Public events Transport surgeries Local media

Energy Saving Trust working with: Business Staff engagement – eco driving simulator Training workshops Smarter driver training Fleet management

Energy Saving Trust working in: Partnership Local activity Support of council initiatives Community support

Support for organisations Large fleets Green Fleet Review Small fleets Grey fleet Carbon Footprinting Motorvate Smarter driving training

Fleet Management Small fleet advice Fleet briefing ( vehicles) Fleet health check Green fleet review (50 vehicles and above) Smarter Driving

Fleet Management – Needs to Encompass Grey Fleet Privately owned vehicle used for business 2 grey fleet vehicles for every company car Average age: grey vehicle = 6.7 years company car = 1.8 years Employees reimbursed at high rates - “incentive to drive”

Green Fleet Review Carbon footprint Digestible report Quantify possible savings with specific recommendations Discuss potential solutions and gain executive support

Motorvate Ongoing advice and support Accreditation through auditing Ongoing commitment Evidence towards ISO14001 certification

Smarter Driving Training for Employees 50 minute lessons Start / finish from workplace Easy to organise Available for all staff

Feedback from Trainees 96% said “useful” or “very useful” 98% enjoyed the training 96% would recommend to a colleague

Costs & Savings With DFT subsidy - Costs only £15+VAT per head Average improvement 16% Savings: £ p.a. (car 12k miles) Reduced vehicle wear and tear Environment Employee benefit Safety Raises morale – team building

Energy Saving Trust also advise upon Domestic Energy Efficiency  Insulation  Renewable technologies  Behavioural change  Grants and offers

Home Insulation Loft Insulation: –Recommended depth of 270mm or 10.5 inches –Can save up to £145 per annum –Grants available – installation cost generally less than £200, or free if householder in receipt of benefits/over the age of 70 Cavity Wall Insulation: If home was built after 1920s, chances are it was built with a cavity wall Can save around £110 per annum Grants available – installation cost generally less than £200, or free if householder in receipt of benefits/over the age of 70

Home Insulation continued… Solid wall insulation: –Walls can be insulated internally or externally –Various methodologies –Can save up to £400 per annum

Renewable Energy Technologies for Generating Electricity: –Solar photovoltaics –Wind turbines –Hydroelectricity Technologies for Generating Heat: –Heat pumps (air, ground and water source all available) –Solar thermal (hot water) –Biomass (i.e. wood pellet boiler) Micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP)

Photovoltaic Case Study Typical 2kWp system (~14m 2 ) Installed cost ~ £10,000 Annual generation ~1800 kWh (and assuming 50% used on site, 50% exported) For installations completed prior to April 2012, the following tariff levels will be guaranteed for a 25 year period and index linked: –41.3p/kWh generation tariff –3p/kWh export tariff Can expect the following income: –£745 yr -1 generation tariff –£27 yr -1 export tariff –£108 yr -1 saving on electricity bill –Total income/saving of £880 each year Payback to be realised in around 10 year period 15 years of profit making thereafter!
