Water in the Air Vocabulary Words for Chapter 15/ Section 1:

(1) Weather Sentence: In good weather, my family plans lots of outside events. Context Clues: Good; outside events

Weather: [noun] The daily conditions of the atmosphere in terms of temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, and moisture. (page 506) Synonyms: None. Antonyms: None.

(2) Humidity Sentence: In many areas of the United States, the high humidity makes you feel warmer than it actually is. This can be very uncomfortable. Context Clues: High humidity; warmer than it actually is

Humidity: [noun] The amount of water vapor in the air. (page 507) Synonyms: Moisture; wetness; sweatiness Antonyms: Dryness; aridity

(3) Vapor Pressure Sentence: When water molecules are added to dry air, there is an increase in air pressure. This increase is caused by vapor pressure. Context Clues: Increase; pressure

Vapor Pressure: [noun] The part of the total atmospheric pressure that is caused by water vapor. (page 507) Synonyms: None. Antonyms: None.

(4) Condensation Sentence: In cold weather, condensation forms on the kitchen window. Context Clues: Cold weather; window

Condensation: [noun] The change of state from a gas to a liquid. (page 509) Synonyms: Water droplets; moisture Antonyms: None.

(5) Evaporate Sentence: As a result of radiation, water evaporates from oceans and lakes. Context Clues: Radiation; oceans; lakes

Evaporate: [verb] To change from a liquid into a vapor or gas. Synonyms: Dry up; vaporize Antonyms: Condense

(6) Dew Point Sentence: The dew point depends on the levels of condensation and evaporation. Context Clues: Condensation; evaporation

Dew Point: [noun] The temperature at which the rate of condensation equals the rate of evaporation. (page 507) Synonyms: None. Antonyms: None.

(7) Relative Humidity Sentence: Relative humidity is a measure of how close the air is to the dew point. Context Clues: Air; dew point

Relative Humidity: [noun] The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the amount of water vapor needed to reach the dew point. (page 507) Synonyms: None. Antonyms: None.

(8) Precipitation Sentence: The level of precipitation is highest during winter and fall; precipitation is usually low during summer. Context Clues: Highest during winter and fall; low during summer

Precipitation: [noun] Any form of water that falls to earth’s surface from the clouds. (page 510) Synonyms: Rain; sleet; hail; snow; moisture. Antonyms: None.
