Presenter Name Date

Choosing Wisely Australia Starting a national conversation about tests, treatments and procedures to question Supporting conversations between clinicians and consumers, based on the best available evidence and the most appropriate care given the individual circumstances Focus on high quality care

Choosing Wisely Australia Part of a global campaign Led by Australia’s medical colleges and societies Facilitated by NPS MedicineWise

NPS MedicineWise Aims to improve quality use of medicines and other health technologies for better health and economic outcomes Delivers multifaceted programs and services for health professionals and consumers at a national level Independent, non-government, not-for-profit

The Issue Sometimes tests, treatments and procedures do not add value Can expose the consumer to undue risk of harm and unnecessary costs Can lead to more frequent and invasive investigations Many tests have become ingrained in the system, a diversion from high quality care

The Issue Consumer expectations that ‘more is better’ Pressure on clinicians to cover all clinical possibilities Distribution of resources, 30% expenditure in the US considered wasteful* *reference available on request

The Issue Just under half of consumers (45%) reported having had a medical test in the last three months: among consumers aged 75 and above this proportion was higher: 67% of consumers aged 75 and above had a medical test in the last 3 months Of those who had had a medical test in the last three months: most had the test because their doctor (GP) or specialist had recommended it While most consumers (71%) agree with the concept of ‘reducing unnecessary tests’, this was not compatible with their attitudes towards medical tests for themselves: 74% agreed that ‘If I am sick, my doctor should conduct all available medical tests that relate to my condition The NPS MedicineWise 2015 consumer survey found:

The Issue Only one third (33%) of consumers agreed that having a medical test when they didn’t need it might be harmful to their health Almost two thirds (61%) of consumers were unsure or disagreed that some tests can produce misleading results The NPS MedicineWise 2015 consumer survey found:

“Choosing Wisely Australia is giving the medical community a long overdue opportunity to reflect on the way we practice and to have frank discussions with our patients about what care is truly needed.” Dr Frank R Jones, President, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

Reaching Consumers Supporting consumers to have a conversation with their doctor via the ‘5 Questions to Ask Your Doctor’ resource Further consumer communications in 2016

“What I like about Choosing Wisely is that it’s opening up the opportunity and making it easier to have those discussions with your doctor or specialist. It’s not easy to ask questions, they are very knowledgeable and sometimes there can be a lot of emotion involved in a decision to take a treatment or test”. Leanne Wells, CEO, Consumers Health Forum

Campaign Strategic Approach Stakeholder engagement and buy in, ‘one message many voices’ Health profession-led, collaborative approach Consumers at the centre Affecting a cultural shift – ‘more is not always better’ Long term communications plan to raise awareness Coordinated evaluation
