Main Elements & Approach WP Concentrate on: –Societal challenges and major policy drivers –More focused priorities and fewer and less prescriptive topics –More flexibility and simplified Work Programme –New approaches to research and innovation e.g. eco- innovation call in WP2011 –Wider participation of European industry and SMES  One overarching theme, three objectives, five priorities  “Transformative and responsible innovation”

WP Objectives (1) To provide knowledge-based options for addressing major societal challenges  Addressing global priorities encouraging international collaboration  Strategic focus on few but broader priorities with high EU added value  Strong linkages with other sectors (e.g. energy, transport, agriculture, health etc.)

WP Objectives (2) To develop and strengthen European leadership in innovation  Supporting Innovation Partnerships (water)  Boosting breakthrough (eco)-innovation by more bottom-up topics  Encouraging wider stakeholder participation  Adopting broad definition of innovation (technological and social)

WP Objectives (3) To promote and facilitate knowledge transfer, assessment, uptake and exploitation of scientific data and results  Encouraging science-policy interactions  Supporting demonstration activities including prototypes, new designs, management tools etc.  Better alignment of Work Programme priorities and communication strategy

WP 2012: Drivers

Policy: Lisbon Treaty Taking Europe into the 21st century methods to tackle both efficiently and effectively today's challenges globalisation, climatic and demographic changes, security and energy The Treaty of Lisbon entered into force on 1 December It provides the EU with modern institutions and optimised working methods to tackle both efficiently and effectively today's challenges in today's world. In a rapidly changing world, Europeans look to the EU to address issues such as globalisation, climatic and demographic changes, security and energy. The Treaty of Lisbon reinforces democracy in the EU and its capacity to promote the interests of its citizens on a day-to-day basis.

Policy: EU 2020 Strategy EU's growth strategy a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy employment, innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy - to be reached by 2020 Europe 2020 is the EU's growth strategy for the coming decade. In a changing world, we want the EU to become a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy. These three mutually reinforcing priorities should help the EU and the Member States deliver high levels of employment, productivity and social cohesion. Concretely, the Union has set five ambitious objectives - on employment, innovation, education, social inclusion and climate/energy - to be reached by Each Member State will adopt its own national targets in each of these areas. Concrete actions at EU and national levels will underpin the strategy.

Policy: Flagship Initiatives New engines to boost growth and jobs. These areas are addressed by 7 flagship initiatives. Within each initiative, both the EU and national authorities have to coordinate their efforts so they are mutually reinforcing.. nSmart growth nDigital agenda for Europe nInnovation Union nYouth on the move nSustainable growth nResource efficient Europe nAn industrial policy for the globalisation era nInclusive growth nAn agenda for new skills and jobs nEuropean platform against poverty

Policy: Innovation Union Flagship Initiative nInnovation provides real benefits for us as citizens, consumers, and workers. It speeds up and improves the way we conceive, develop, produce and access new products, industrial processes and services. It is the key not only to creating more jobs, building a greener society and improving our quality of life, but also to maintaining our competitiveness on the global market. nOne of the seven flagship initiatives of the Europe 2020 strategy for a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy. nAim to do three things: nworld-class science performer; nremove obstacles to innovation nrevolutionize the way public and private sectors work together,.

Policy: Resource-Efficient Europe Flagship Initiative Supports the shift towards a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy to achieve sustainable growth. Supports the shift towards a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy to achieve sustainable growth. Increasing resource efficiency is key to securing growth and jobs for Europe. It will bring major economic opportunities, improve productivity, drive down costs and boost competitiveness. Provides a long-term framework for actions in many policy areas, supporting policy agendas for climate change, energy, transport, industry, raw materials, agriculture, fisheries, biodiversity and regional development.

European Research Area An open space for knowledge all research and development activities, programmes and policies transnationa access to a Europe-wide open space for knowledge The European Research Area is composed of all research and development activities, programmes and policies in Europe which involve a transnational perspective. Together, they enable researchers, research institutions and businesses to increasingly circulate, compete and co-operate across borders. The aim is to give them access to a Europe-wide open space for knowledge and technologies in which transnational synergies and complementarities are fully exploited.
