+ Montgomery College Program Assessment Orientation Spring 2013

+ Today’s Outcomes By the end of this session, you will be able to: Explain the goals of program assessment Identify the steps for developing and implementing a program assessment plan Identify the timeline for developing your program assessment plans Identify resources for developing your program assessment plans

+ Goals of Program Assessment Program Assessment should answer the following questions: What are the most important skills, knowledge or attitudes we want graduates to demonstrate when they have completed a series of courses? How do we know that students are achieving those expectations?

+ Program Assessment Vs. CAR Program Assessment Focused on degree or certificates Focused on assessing student performance related to program outcomes Recommended actions may connect to or impact CAR rec’s. Systematic opportunity for faculty to talk about the program intent A component of institutional effectiveness Directly required for accreditation Use student performance data to make curricular, programmatic decisions College Area Review Focused on areas divided by disciplines or areas of responsibility Indirect review of course offerings and resource allocation Broad focus to impact strategic planning Self evaluation process related to institutional effectiveness

+ Program Assessment Plan Components Part 1 is an overview that summarizes the plan. This part will be updated periodically over the 5 year assessment plan cycle. Part 2 is an assessment Implementation Timeline that lays out when data will be collected during the assessment plan period. Part 3 is the assessment instruments. In this part, we are looking for copies of assessments, scoring rubrics, and data collection set up information.

+ Program Assessment Plan Timeline 5 year cycle reviewed and revised, as needed, in the 6 th year reflect a cycle of assessment data review and reflection implementation of action plans updating status

+ Developing a Program Assessment plan Step 1- Review program outcomes to ensure they reflect appropriate expectations for the program Broad Measurable Reasonably achievable Determine where in the program students can demonstrate the achievement of the outcomes Could be a culminating assignment/project in class (direct) Internship reflection (indirect) Alumni survey (indirect) Use Course Outcomes Matrix to help you

+ Developing a Program Assessment plan Step Two Determine how to assess each outcome Determine where and how the assessment will be given Determine when during the 5 year cycle Step Three Determine benchmarks, indicators (or success criteria/or scoring rubric) Determine cohort or method of data collection (which students will participate in the assessment

+ Developing a Program Assessment plan Step Four Determine implementation timeline (Part 2 of the plan form) Step Five Develop the assessment and scoring criteria

+ Program Assessment Plans – Other Info Program Assessment plans are due by April 26, 2013 to COAT team faculty can help. Each program will be assigned a COAT contact. Check in with similar programs at other cc’s or national organizations to see what types of program assessments are happening, benchmarks, etc- you don’t have to recreate the wheel. If you are going to revise program outcomes, develop the assessment plan at the same time with the new outcomes.
