Feb 2011 Objectives – The aim of the initiative is to promote the rights of young people who have a learning disability in relation to their personal relationships and sexuality. To provide a free and confidential service to the young people who have a learning disability attending St Christopher’s School, that enables them to take control of their own sexual health needs and choices. Gaining the skills necessary to access generic sexual health services effectively when they leave school and throughout their adult live.

Feb 2011 Background ‘Info shop’ Young peoples information Centre, Wrexham town centre Running since Over 7,000 young people up to the age of 25 have registered with the sexual health service. 4 clinics a week. 2 Family Planning Nurses 2 Youth Workers Mon, Wed, Fri, pm & Sat 11am-1.30pm

Feb 2011 Mainstream Secondary school ‘Info outreach’ - pilot 2007 Special Education School ‘Info Outreach’ discussed with School Governing Board June 08. Formal proposal Oct 08 resulting in unanimous support. Parent / Carer Consultation meeting April 09, poor attendance, although full support gained. Parent information sheet distributed. Service commenced September 2009

Feb 2011 NUMBER CRUNCHING ! September 09 to October young people have registered. (240 pupils attend the school) 10 girls and 36 boys. 1x 13 year old 5 x 14 year old 10 x 15 year old 7 x 16 years old 9 x 17 year old 11 x 18 year old 3 x 19 year old

Feb 2011 Visit breakdown A total of 134 visits have been made to the ‘drop in’ in the 13 months it has been running. 76 of these visits being return visits.

Feb 2011 RESEARCH There is some consensus about what works to reduce teenage pregnancy and good evidence was found for the effectiveness of school-based sex education particularly linked to contraceptive services aimed at preventing unintended teenage pregnancies. (Swann et al 2003). This is endorsed by the Health Development agency (2004) stating that school-based SRE particularly when linked to contraceptive service, can have an impact on young people’s knowledge and attitudes, delay sexual activity and/or reduce pregnancy rates.
