A Variable Way to Practice variables

Hypothesis An explanation for a observation or phenomenon. If…then,…because statement.

Independent variable Factor that you wish to test and that is changed so that it can be tested. Expressed after the word if in the hypothesis.

Dependent variable The factor that you measure to gather results. Expressed after the word then in the hypothesis.

I wonder if the number of books I read will help me get smarter? Hypothesis: If I read more books then I will become smarter because I am learning new information.

I wonder what will happen to my plant if I leave it in the closet with no light? Hypothesis: If I leave my plant in the closet with no light then, it will grow because it will be left alone.

I wonder if I watch movies with a lot of swearing in it, I will start swearing more? Hypothesis: If I watch movies with a lot of swearing in it, then I will swear more because I am hearing those words more often.

If you increase the number of cigarettes you smoke, then you will increase your risk for lung cancer. Independent: number of cigarettes you smoke Dependent: increase risk for lung cancer

If you increase the amount of blood in the water, then you will increase the number of sharks in the area. Independent: amount of blood in the water Dependent: increase the number of sharks

If you increase the amount of milk you drink, then you will increase the strength of your bones. Independent: increase the amount of milk you drink Dependent: increase the strength of your bones

If you increase the number of hours you spend in practice, then you will increase the number of free throw shots you will make. Independent: increase the number of hours you practice Dependent: increase the number of free throw shots you make.

Final practices #1 Hypothesis: If amount of running increases, then the heart rate will increase Independent: amount of running Dependent: heart rate

Final practices #2 Hypothesis: If I eat only Special K cereal, milk and water, then I will lose weight. Independent: food eaten Dependent: weight
