Unit 3 Day 1 (Expansion and Slavery) Quote: “I have heard something said about allegiance to the South. I know no South, no North, no East, no West, to which I owe any allegiance.” - Henry Clay Essential Question(s): Was American culture, during the Antebellum era, more unifying or Divisive? How did the regional development of the United Stated create division between the North and the South? Specified Content: The Missouri Compromise 1820, abolitionist, States’ Rights, popular sovereignty, The Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 6 PO 1 (Explain the economic, social, and political causes of the Civil War)

Expansion and Slavery As the nation expanded Congress will try and maintain an equal number of “free” and “slave” states. In 1820 this led to the Missouri Compromise forbidding slavery in the territories north of Missouri’s southern border.

By the 1830’s opponents of slavery were known as abolitionists. They used their resources to educate others on the evils of slavery as well as physically helping slaves escape their masters.

States’ Rights advocates and pro-slavers began pushing for further expansion of slavery into the territories. They wanted popular sovereignty (the people who live in a territory should decide if they want to be open to slavery.)

Compromise of 1850, California admitted as a free state, Utah and New Mexico territories allowed to decide on their own if they wanted slavery or not.

1854, Kansas - Nebraska Act: The Kansas and Nebraska territories opened to popular sovereignty. Violence takes place between abolitionists and pro- slavery groups in the territories

Uncle Tom’s Cabin p.374 by Harriet Beecher Stowe “My sympathies are not for my father's race, but for my mothers. To him I was no more than a fine dog or horse: to my poor heart-broken mother I was a child; and, though I never saw her, after the cruel sale that separated us, till she died, yet I know she always loved me dearly. I know it by my own heart. I have no wish to pass for an American, or to identify myself with them. It is with the oppressed, enslaved African race that I cast in my lot; and, if I wished anything, I would wish myself two shades darker, rather than one lighter.”
