El Día de los Muertos- Introduction ¿Que es la celebración del Día de los Muertos? El dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a celebration that captures the idea of unity between life and death. It emphasizes death as part of the cycle of life.

Celebración del Día de los Muertos ¿Cuándo se celebra? Day of the Dead is celebrated on November the 1st-remembering the dead children and Nov. 2nd- rembering the adults.

Celebración del Día de los Muertos ¿Cómo empezó esta tradición? The tradition dates back to about 3,000 years ago, before the arrival of the Spaniards in México. -Many of its symbols have become iconic including the use of sugar skulls and skeletons.

Celebración del Día de los Muertos ¿Cómo celebra la gente este día? The idea is to remeber a person for what they did while they were alive. It is like taking flowers to the cementery as a symbol of respect and gratitude. - In this event people include food, drinks, candles, and special items that the person liked while he/she was alive.

Celebración del Día de los Muertos The offering is a special place(table) dedicated for the deceased person. The offering must have the four earth elements earth, water, fire, and wind

To Represent Wind: Papel Picado - Tissue-Paper Cut Outs Tissue-paper banners with cutout designs of animated skeleton figures adorn homes during El Día de los Muertos.

Candles are used to represent Fire Candles are placed on the ofrenda to light and guide the way of the souls to the altar.

Flowers are used to represent Earth The Zempasuchil-marigold was the symbolic flower of death to the Aztecs. Perhaps this association was made because once the marigold is cut, it dies very quickly. For this reason, Flowers on the ofrenda refer to the earth and the regenerative forces of nature.

To represent water a glass of water is placed on the ofrenda To quench the thirst of the returning souls after their long journey, a glass of water is placed on the ofrenda. This emphasizes the fact that water is the main support of life.

 To add a personal touch the most favorite objects, drinks, or food must be present in the deceased’s ofrenda. REMEMBER This all SYMBOLIC!! REMEMBER This all SYMBOLIC!!

Tombs are decorated bright and early on November 1 st and 2 nd.

On November the 1 st and 2 nd everyone visits the graveyard. It is like a giant picnic. People share food, music, laughter and memories.

A young woman is dressed in a skeleton costume to celebrate the spirit of the day.

 Día de los Muertos vs. Halloween

By the end of this unit you will be able to complete a memory plate in honor of a person or pet that is no longer living. -The idea is to make your plate reflect important memories that person/pet left for you. -Think of the memory plate as a visual biography of that person/pet. -You may pick an important celebrity or historical figure.

Requirements: 1. A paper plate (5pts) 2. Picture of the person being remembered (5pts) 3. 4 things that person liked (12 pts) 4. 4 earth elements (wind, earth, fire, and water) (8pts) *All parts of the plate should be covered-no empty space.
