Activating Strategy Why Is Ketchup So Hard To Pour?

Review: 3 Phases of Matter Match the vocabulary word with the correct picture. Solid Liquid Gas

What is a Phase Change? Phase change is a change from one state of matter to another. Phase changes are physical changes because they only affects physical appearance, not chemical make-up, so they can be reversed.

What happens during a phase change? During a phase change, heat energy is either absorbed or released. Heat energy is released as molecules slow down and move closer together. Heat energy is absorbed as molecules speed up and expand.

Types of Phase Changes Write the name of each type of phase change on the correct arrow. Use the following slides to help.

Types of Phase Changes The arrows on this picture are all red. This is not correct. Color code the arrows on your page. Red for increasing temperature and blue for decreasing temperature. Use the following slides to help.

Changing State Directions for this interactive are at the top of the screen. Answer the question in the notes outline in your INB - use complete sentences. Changing State Interactive

Melting A change in state of matter from a solid to a liquid. Increasing Temperature Atoms Movement = Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy.

Freezing A change in state of matter from a liquid to a solid Decreasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecule slow down, move closer together and release heat energy.

Melting and Freezing Interactive Directions for this interactive are at the top of the screen. Complete the data table in your INB.

Vaporization (Boiling) A change in state of matter from a liquid to gas. It occurs at the substance's boiling point. Increasing Temperature Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy. The most boring video ever - boiling water

Evaporation A change in state of matter from a liquid to a gas on the surface of a liquid. Increasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy.

Condensation A change in state of matter from a gas to a liquid. Decreasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecule slow down, move closer together and release heat energy.

Sublimation & Deposition Video Watch the video to help you understand these two process.

Sublimation A change in state of matter from a solid to a gas. Increasing Temperature Atoms Movement= Molecules speed up, move farther apart, and absorb heat energy. Sublimation & Deposition Video

Deposition A change in state of matter from a gas to a solid. Decreasing Temperature Atoms movement= Molecules slow down, move closer together and release heat energy.

In your INB describe what happens to the temperature of water as it is changing from a solid to a liquid. What happens to the temperature during phase change?

Summarizer 1.Why is there no change in temperature during a phase change? 1.Define melting and boiling points. 1.What is the melting point and boiling point of water? 1.At what temperature does water freeze and become a solid?

Moving from State to State 1.Paste this sheet into your INB on page Follow the directions on the sheet.
