Kenya-Spain Multilateral Partnership 10 th December 2013

 Located in the Coastal Region of Kenya  Population - 284,667 (2009)  Land – 17,000 SqM  62% is occupied by Tsavo East and Tsavo West  24% of the land is Range land  12% is suitable for irrigated farming.  Altitude – Low Lands 400 m a.s.l Highlands up to 2,000m a.s.l  Rainfall – 400mm-800mm in 2 Seasons  Population Densely Located on the highlands and the areas close to the highlands and the slopes of mount Kilimanjaro  Taveta is 700m a.s.l and located 50km from the Taita Hills on the foot of mount Kilimanjaro  Income per capita below national average of USD 630 p.a

 Agriculture is the main economic activity.  Small scale farming on land averaging 0.5 acres (up the hills) to 2 acres (lower lands) per farmer.  Livestock – dairy cattle,shoats in homesteads  Ranching – 29 ranches occupying 1m acres  Tourism – Tsavo East and West 12,000 elephants.  Mining – Tsavorite,garnets,rubies etc. Iron ore, coal  Business – 4 townships with about 50,000 people (Total urban population)  Voi is the main economic town and Wundanyi is the political capital. Mwatate is the future political/economic capital.Taveta is the bread basket.

 Only 35% can access safe domestic water  Average walking distance to get water – 1km during rainy season and 2km during dry weather  Less than 5% of farming is done through Irrigation  Severe scarcity during dry weather leading to loss of some livestock  Many economic activities hampered by lack of water

 5 Seasonal Rivers  160 Springs  40 Water pans  29 Boreholes  65 Shallow wells  2 Lakes – Lake Challa, Lake Jipe  8 Dams

1. Very bad especially up the hills. Severe deforestation. Springs virtually drying up. 2. Heavy siltation on lower lands. Siltation of water pans and dams 3. Heavy siltation on Lake Jipe 4. Creation of gulleys during flood seasons.

 The population requires  9m Cubic meters per year for domestic use  6m cubic meters per year for livestock  2m cubic meters for Wildlife  30M cubic meters for Irrigation

 Much of the county has agricultural potential with good reddish brown loamy soils.  There are large parcels of land not cultivated  Water the main ingredient missing.  There is a railway line cutting across the county (requires rehabilitation)  The county is kms from Mombasa  Target to put 50,000 acres under Irrigation (including small scale)

 29 Ranches occupying 1m acres  Disease free zone  Average of 200km from Mombasa Seaport and airport.  Plan to build an Abattoir for International market

 12,000 Elephants in Tsavo East/West and Ranches. Zebras,Lions,Girrafes etc  The largest concentration of Elephants in one location.  Human Wildlife conflict due to water shortage  Provision of water to wildlife and human beings will reduce human/wildlife conflict and boost tourism.

 The County has sufficient water resources within and has identified 2 sources to be developed.  Mzima Springs  Lake Challa

 Located in Taita Taveta County and receives water from Chyulu hills.  Generates 35,000 cubic meters of water piped to Mombasa and other towns (under gravity).  Potential for another 160,000 cubic meters of water – (Proposed Mzima2 project).  Estimated Cost USD 450m for full project to Mombasa (Feasibility done)  Estimated Cost for Taita Taveta only – USD 100m to provide 40,000 CM/day (based on feasibility of Msa pipeline)

 Located in Taveta (slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro)  Obtains underground water from Mount Kilimanjaro  Holds 500M Cubic Meters of fresh water  Proposed project to pump water for Irrigation to irrigate 2,000 ha.  Estimated project cost USD40M.(Feasibility done)

 Provide food for the population  Create a huge potential for food production for Kenyan market and export  Create huge potential for Livestock production for local market and export  Reduce human/wildlife conflict and increase tourist visitors  Open up the county for other investment opportunities such as mining and other industries.

 The Government of Taita Taveta County is seeking partners to help develop these 2 projects ie Mzima 2 and Lake Challa to enable the distribution of 70,000CM/day of water for human, livestock, wildlife and food production.

 PPP arrangement  Sale of water to citizens  Value addition to agriculture  Marketing of Livestock (Abattoir)  Sell water to KWS – Tsavo  Sell water to upcoming Industries (eg.Steel Industry).  Control water ….. Control the economy.
