Welcome to Gr. 2 MUSIC Exploring words that describe sound Original ppt. by Lynne Dearlove, adapted by Nancy Johnson, 2009

Hi. My name is Camille Saint-Saens. I was born on Oct. 9, 1835 in Paris, France and was a famous composer, piano player and organist. I first played the piano when I was 2 years old. I wrote my first piece of music at age 3 and was still giving concerts when I was 85 years old. I was also an expert in math and archaeology.

This is a picture of me playing the organ. Another famous musician, Franz Liszt, called me the greatest organist in the world. I tease piano players in this section: C:\Documents and Settings\njohnson\My Documents\Carnival of the Animals videos\12. Pianists-Claymation.wmvC:\Documents and Settings\njohnson\My Documents\Carnival of the Animals videos\12. Pianists-Claymation.wmv

One piece of music I am famous for is Carnival of the Animals. I wrote it as a musical joke for a celebration called Carnival that occurs right before Lent begins. Even though many children have heard this music now I didn’t want the music performed while I was still alive. I didn’t think it was very good. H:\Carnival of the Animals videos\1. Overview-Mimes.wmv

The music has 13 sections and was written to entertain my friends. Each section is about a different animal. I made the music for each animal very different by changing: the instruments I chose, the Tempo (speed of the beat), the Dynamics (how loudly or softly the music is played), and the Articulation (how bumpy or smooth the music sounds.) The next slides will tell you about some of the animals.

1 March of the Lions What instrument do you hear? How does the music sound? H:\Carnival of the Animals videos\2. Intro & March of the Lions-Live.wmv

Did you hear the piano roar? 1 I wrote loud chords (groups of notes) to announce the arrival of the King of the Jungle. March of the Lions

There’s more—Look at the next pictures to see what else I wrote about. How would you make the music sound? Loud or soft High or low Bumpy or smooth Long or short sounds Fast or slow Heavy or light What instrument would you choose?

You are now going to hear another one of the songs from Carnival of the Animals. But I’m not going to tell you what animal it is. You will need to be a “detective” and figure it out. I hope you have enjoyed my music. Maybe you can listen to another one of my favorites called Danse Macabre. Do you remember learning about the Canary Islands? This statue of me is on the island of Las Palmas.
