CELDT PRACTICE Speaking Version A

SPEAKING CELDT assesses students’ speaking skills in 20 items CELDT divides the speaking assessment in four parts Oral Vocabulary Speech Functions Choose and Give Reasons 4-Picture Narrative CELDT assesses students’ ELD Proficiency using ELD Standards

Expected Speaking ELD Proficiency Level Early Advanced Strategies and Applications Make oneself understood when speaking by using consistent standard English grammatical forms, sounds, intonation, pitch, and modulation but may make random errors. Participate in and initiate more extended social conversations with peers and adults on unfamiliar topics by asking and answering questions and restating and soliciting information. Recognize appropriate ways of speaking that vary according to the purpose, audience, and subject matter. Respond to messages by asking questions, challenging statements, or offering examples that affirm the message. Use simple figurative language and idiomatic expressions (e.g., “heavy as a ton of bricks,” “soaking wet”) to communicate ideas to a variety of audiences.

Expected Speaking ELD Proficiency Level Advanced Strategies and Applications Demonstrate an understanding of figurative language and idiomatic expressions by responding to such expressions and using them appropriately.
