CMU Study Abroad-2014 A team of 6 CMU students and our professor Dr. Omar Keith Helferich and wife Patricia traveled to La Romana in the Dominican Republic as part of a 3 credit course. We visited multiple bateys and interacted with the families living there to get a better understanding of their lifestyle and needs. The purpose of the trip was to come up with practical initiatives to improve the holistic well being of the people living in extreme poverty.

Research and anecdotal observations indicate that in general humanitarian initiatives lack an approach to achieve and measure sustainability. Need to close gap between short and long-term development and consider both jointly Demand for more transparency for humanitarian initiatives Recognition that metrics focus too much on outputs with too little on outcomes Sophisticated donors are now more likely to require documentation of the results Sustainability guidelines are becoming available for humanitarian initiatives e.g.; World Health Organization, Rotary International, & UN, and ISO

Preface Objective is improve community health programs for Dominican Republic through continuous process improvement : Six Sigma- Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC): Define Phase: Determine the project goals and requirements of the families/ village Measure Phase: Assess needs and specifications for the selected community health opportunity Analyze Phase: Evaluate and identify vital few factors to identify root causes of current community health defects -quantify performance gap and generate ideas for improvement. Improve Phase: Analyze and evaluate improvement ideas plus plan and implement solutions. Control Phase: Establish action plan for selected solutions and implement the procedures/ controls to sustain the expected improved performance. Students utilize DMAIC to report potential for improving holistic community health for a La Romana Dominican Republic village(s). The potential health initiative topics include but are not limited to the following needs: – Clean water – Medical services – Dental services – Family nutrition -food and/or assets/facilities – Sanitation-procedures and/or assets/facilities’ – Primary and adult education – Family entrepreneurial opportunities

Mission Summary Define the status of the villages within the sugar cane & other poverty areas. The residents of the poverty level frequently do not have adequate access to achieve or maintain family health due to the following: -lack of clean water -medical & dental health -nutrition -general sanitation -education In addition, there is lack of opportunity for employment.

Village Summary What are the Bateys and who lives in them? Bateys are villages where many Haitians live that work for the sugarcane company's. – 1/3 of Bateys lack education – 2/3 of Bateys lack access to clean water – No or limited access to electricity – sparse amount of food – little or no access to healthcare When visiting the Bateys we noticed the extreme poverty and unlivable conditions these people where living in. Some of the families in the Bateys were given water filters to provide them with clean water. After talking to them it was amazing the difference in their health just from having clean water.

Improve Summary Holistic Health - Long Term Opportunities Develop a program to ensure vitamins for children in bateys. Improvements Provided - Education Study abroad team provided school items for the Rotaract selected batey Study Abroad team provided sewing machine to a Health Promoter to teach adult women sewing to sell via the company. Program to be monitored and evaluated. Study Abroad Team provided a variety of vegetable seeds based on batey health promoter request to launch a full garden for the batey. Program to be monitored and evaluated.
