Safety Week 1

Science Lab Rules Think Ahead: Study the steps of the investigation so you know what to expect. If you have any questions, ask. Be Neat: Keep your work area clean. Record your data carefully and neatly. Watch Your Eyes: Wear safety goggles anytime you are directed to do so. If anything gets in your eyes, tell your teacher right away.

YUCK!: Never eat or drink anything during a science activity. Keep It Clean: Always clean up when you have finished. Wash your hands.

Scientific Tools Stopwatch Ruler Meterstick Double pan balance Triple beam balance Magnifying glass/hand lens Spring scale Beaker Graduated cylinder Safety goggles Microscope

Balance Scientific Tool Measures Mass People often get mass mixed up with weight, because when you're on Earth, the two are pretty much the same - things with more mass also have more weight. The truck would be heavier than the bike. But weight changes depending on how much gravity you have pulling on you - the same truck would be lighter on Mars or on the Moon, and it wouldn't weigh anything at all in space, but it would always have the same mass.

Thermometer/ Temperature Thermometers measure temperature. Temperature can be measured in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. In science we use the Celsius scale. Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is.

What happens to the liquid in the thermometer when it gets hot? What happens to the liquid in the thermometer when it gets cold? What information can you learn by using a thermometer?

Scientific Method A plan scientists use to conduct a study. Steps Purpose Hypothesis, Materials Procedures Data Collection Results Conclusion. Explain the steps of the scientific process. What is a hypothesis? Why should scientific investigations be repeated more than once? What are variables? How many variables should you have in an experiment?

Safety is Number 1 Safety Rules During an Investigation Wear safety goggles when needed Never eat or drink during an activity Be neat Follow teacher’s directions Questions: What should the students do if they break a beaker? What should the students do if they spill liquids on the table or floor? Demonstrate how students should smell liquids in the science lab. You walk into the lab and see science equipment on your table. What should you do?

Which of the following does not demonstrate safe practices when doing laboratory investigations? Never eat or drink in the lab. Read the procedure before you start the experiment. As soon as you sit down, start playing with all the equipment on your table. Follow all of your teacher’s instructions.

Time it takes to run a Mile Two students did an investigation to test how long it would take them to run a mile. They ran 5 miles total. Both students ran a mile at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 and noon. They recorded this data. Write two true statements using this information. Time it takes to run a Mile Student A (min) Student B (min 8:00 AM 5.0 8.0 9:00 AM 6.5 12.5 10:00 AM 15.0 11:00 AM 12.0 18.5 Noon 22.0

Use a metric ruler to measure the length of the butterfly below from point A to B to the nearest centimeter.

Which tool would you use to measure the volume of a small amount of liquid? Hand lens Centimeter ruler Double pan balance Graduated cylinder

Describe what you might wear for each of the Celsius temperatures below: Clothing 0° C 10°C 20°C 30°C
