Part 1 File Formats Definition: A file format is a way to write the code of information for storage of an electronic file on a computer. Different software programs save files using file extensions at the end of the file names.fileformatcomputer File format extensions for MSOffice 2010 programs: Word (Word Processing) =.docx PowerPoint (Presentation Software) =.pptx Excel (Spreadsheet) =.xlsx Access (Database) =.accdb

Finding Files Have you ever used the Open command from the File menu and not found the file you wanted? It may because the file format may not be able to be read by the application you are using. Huh? For example, if you try to open an Excel file when you are using Word, you will not be able to see the file listed. What can you do?

You could switch the file type within the Open dialog box to show All Files. But, that does not necessarily mean that the application will be able to open the file. Therefore, you should open a file in the application you used to create it.

Part 2 File Formats Definition: A file format is a way to write the code of information for storage of an electronic file on a computer.fileformatcomputer What is a BITMAP? Bitmap images are formed by a pattern of dots Each single point in the image is a pixel (picture element) The smaller the pixels in the image, the smoother it will look The more colors in the image, the brighter and sharper the image will look

Bitmap-Format Files Common bitmapped file formats include: GIF files TIFF files JPEG files BMP files

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK FROM A DIFFERENT PROSPECTIVE

They are not the same…  The four Garfield graphics were all saved as a different file formats. 1.Garfield Graphic1 Format -.bmp 2.Garfield Graphic2 Format -.gif 3.Garfield Graphic3 Format -.jpg 4.Garfield Graphic4 Format -.tiff  Look at how they appear different when saved on the desktop. Let’s find out more about file formats…

.bmp standard bit-mapped graphics format used in the Windows environment bit map picture, consists of rows and columns of dots, to create a graphics image pixels (dots of color) are not compressed requires a lot of storage Avoid saving in this format

.gif stands for “Graphic Interchange Format” graphics contain a maximum of 256 colors best used for images and large areas of solid, flat, color Examples - simple illustrations, logos, cartoons, text as graphics, cartoons, etc. uses little file space and is web friendly can be opened in any photo viewing or editing software on your computer

.jpg stands for “Joint Photographic Experts Group” similar to.gif files,. jpg files (or.jpeg) are cross- platform (both PC and Mac) and compressed (shrunk down in file size) contain up to 16.7million colors (24 bit) b etter for photographs and is web friendly can be opened in any photo viewing or editing software on your computer

.tiff stands for “tagged image file format” often the extension used for saving scanned documents and for printing f ile size is large and can not be used on the web
