Unit G: Working with Pictures

Placing a picture on a page The picture box, like a text box, is a container. Once a picture is placed in a picture box, the image and the box can both be modified. Adding the picture in the picture box: –File -> Get Picture –Edit -> Insert Object

Common Picture Files and their Extensions BMP: Bitmap PCX: PC Paintbrush EPS: Encapsulated PostScript PIC, PCT: PICT files GIF: Graphics Interchange Format SCT: Scitex CT JPEG, JPG: JPEF Picture Format TIFF: Tagged Image File Format PCD: Kodak PhotoCD WMF: Windows Metafile

Changing margins and adding placeholder text When creating a new document, you have the option of choosing the number of columns and the margin guide settings. Once a document exists, however, you can change these settings using the Master Guides command on the Page menu.

You can change the text inset to create an attractive cushion of space between a text box and the actual text. This is useful because sometimes the text seems slammed against the left and right margins in a text box. It is also helpful if you want a small amount of text to fit better in a large text box.

Modifying picture box properties There are four categories of picture box modifications: box, picture, frame, and runaround. Each category has a tab in which you can modify settings that affect the appearance of an image. The four categories are as follows: Box: properties that control the actual contain in which the image is stored Picture : properties that control the contents of the box Frame: properties that control the frame that surrounds the box Runaround: distance of objects (such as text) to the outer edge of the box

See Table G-3: Common Picture Box Modifications

Modifying color contrast The Picture Contrast Specifications dialog box lets you adjust the color values in an image using contrast controls for a specific color model. Once you’ve selected a model from the Model list arrow, you can adjust specific color qualities using the input and output controls on a graph.
