EREADER PILOT STUDY: KINDLES IN THE CLASSROOM Presented by: Melanie Coldiron ERDTS Division, CCIU

Background Invited educators in Chester County public school system to participate in an eReader Pilot Study using the Kindle Wi-Fi in the classroom with the following objectives in mind: OBJECTIVES: to assess the overall effectiveness of eReaders in K-12 education, Grades to identify impacts of the eReaders on teaching and learning activities to evaluate the ease of use for eReaders in classroom instruction

Select Summary Statistics

Summary of Results OBJECTIVE 1: to assess the overall effectiveness of eReaders in K-12 education, 9-12 Grades RESULTS: Many students were able to take notes more easily with the eReaders than books. Students using the eReaders were also more inclined to participate in class discussions. Overall, students had mixed reactions in using the eReaders. OBJECTIVE 2: to identify impacts of the eReaders on teaching and learning activities RESULTS: The teachers commented that the students scored the same way for the eReader users as compared to the book users. The lack of page numbers for the ebooks made it difficult for some students to follow along or catch up. OBJECTIVE 3: to evaluate the ease of use for eReaders in classroom instruction RESULTS: Most students found the eReaders easy to use. The following features were found helpful to many students: notes, highlighting, bookmarking, search, and dictionary features. Lack of page numbers makes it difficult for classroom instruction; however, newer ebooks now have page number references.

Article: Students Hooked on Nooks  "The students are reading more - and they're more excited about reading.”  Student surveys show that an overwhelming majority of the students are reading more every night, enjoying it more - and they're finding additional benefits, including access to textbooks and online libraries, and research materials that help them in other content areas as well.  Because many of the books on the reading list for the course are classic selections, most are public domain books and can be downloaded for free.  The program is helping to teach students digital literacy, which is included in the state's new common core content standards.  nts-hooked-Nooks- nts-hooked-Nooks-
