Apostrophes There are 2 ways of using apostrophes. To show omission. (Missing something out.) To show possession. (That something belongs to something or someone.)

Omission Sometimes when we are writing or speaking we shorten two (or more) words into one. For example Did not becomes didn’t She is becomes she’s Notice where the apostrophe goes. It goes where letters have been removed. (NOT where the two words join.)

Possession Apostrophes can also be used to show what belongs to who. For example: That is Ryan’s exercise book? To show the book belongs to Ryan we add and ‘s to the end of his name.

Possession Some more examples Where is the dog’s bowl? Go to Mrs Hull’s office. You are ruining the school’s reputation. That is my dad’s car.

Possession …but it can be a bit more complicated…if a word already ends in ‘s’. If a word already ends in ‘s’ just add an apostrophe at the end. That is Chris’ bike. (Chris already ends in ‘s’ so we just need to add an apostrophe.)

Possession The bit where most people tend to get confused is when we’re dealing with plurals. (More than one person or thing.) These words usually end in ‘s’ anyway so we just have to add an apostrophe at the end. For example. I have two brothers who share a bedroom. My brothers’ bedroom is very untidy. I only have one brother. I often borrow my brother’s phone.

Exception to the Rule Its & It’s It’s = An abbreviated form of ‘it is’. e.g. It’s a nice day today Its = Possessive – Belonging to it e.g. The dog has lost its collar. We don’t use the apostrophe to show possession in this case so that we don’t confuse the words its and it’s.
