 OE portrayed as something as working against us 

 A characteristic of Australia’s environment is climatic variation. Australia’s droughts and the portrayal of it being drought prone is reinforced with images of Aust being  Harsh, dry & unforgiving  (vs Alone across Aust)  The environment is portrayed as a threat to making a livelihood

 Portraying the OE as a resource reflects the attitude that it should be used to support our needs  Human needs by taking from the environment or modifying the environment to meet our needs  Underlying this portrayal is an increasing understanding of the need for sustainability and conservation

 It is represented as a place of history that can be used to help us understand human relationships with OE  A storehouse of items to help improve our knowledge  Areas that remain intact/wild/in a natural state can help us understand the effect of humans (as well as the effect of OE on humans)  OE as important remnants of what was once all around us

 Regards OE in a spiritual way  Existence & health of OE emphasised as essential to human well being

 Connection to the outdoors (human – nature)  Increasingly popular in developed/urbansied cultures  Influenced by indigenous rights & understandings  Less focus on formal religion, more people finding their “spirituality” in different ways  Humans part of nature (not separate or superior to nature)

 Deep ecology is an ecological and environmental philosophy promoting the inherent worth of living beings regardless of their instrumental utility to human needs, plus a radical restructuring of modern human societies in accordance with such ideas.  Human interference with or destruction of the natural world poses a threat therefore not only to humans but to all organisms constituting the natural order.
