Sustaining Technology Enhanced Learning Large-scale multidisciplinary Research The STELLAR Network of Excellence A European FP7 project Marie Joubert

The context  Research in TEL  Two previous Networks of Excellence  Target learners  Technology

Why?  Fragmentation of disciplines  Community fragmentation  Risk averse behaviour  No clear research agenda

How?  Multidisciplinary consortium  Support and build researcher capacity  Integration of key European research teams  Provide a strategic direction for the integration of TEL excellence  Engage with key stakeholders in TEL Scientific backbone of three Grand Challenges Scientific backbone of three Grand Challenges

A brief overview  Timeframes  Beneficiaries  Membership  Communication  A first go at ‘defining’ the Grand Challenges

… Understanding … … … … … Improving … Grand Challenges The Scientific Backbone: Connecting Learners  Increased connectivity  Networked learning  Knowledge Sharing  Collaborative learning  Lifelong ? Research questions

… Understanding … … … … … Improving … The Scientific Backbone: Orchestrating Learning  The metaphor  The role of the teacher  Micro- and macro-scripting  Personalised learning  Assessment ? Research questions Grand Challenges

… Understanding … … … … … Improving … The Scientific Backbone: Strengthening Contexts  Mobility  Physical environments  Virtual learning environments  Personalisation and mashing up  Interoperability ? Research questions Grand Challenges

Grand Challenge Problems  Development in Grand Challenge thinking  What is a GC Problem? This TEL Grand Challenge problem has the following characteristics: clearly stated, short statements, contribution to long- term benefits for society timely, measurable and incremental be relevant within the European education context attract interest and funding  Grand Challenge Problems and the three Ts  Roles within the workshop

Grand Challenge Problems 1.0: Design and validate an integrated system that provides real-time access to learning experiences tuned to the levels of difficulty and assistance that optimizes learning for all learners, and that incorporates self-improving features that enable it to become increasingly effective through interaction with learners. 2.0: Design and validate an integrated system for designing and implementing valid, reliable, and cost-effective assessments of complex aspects of 21st century expertise and competencies across academic disciplines. 3.0: Design and validate an integrated approach for capturing, aggregating, mining, and sharing content, student learning, and financial data cost-effectively for multiple purposes across many learning platforms and data systems in near real time.

First thoughts?  Design and validate …  Why do we care about online collaboration?  Why do we care about structuring online collaboration?
