© SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008 Tips and Tricks for Working with Scribe Insight Trace Files

Agenda  How to work with the trace file from the Workbench  How to read trace files  Key words in trace files  How to work with trace files with message processors on the Scribe server  Tips and tricks © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

Tracing Using the Workbench  Main trace – Traces actions taken by the Workbench – Enabled and named in View|Options in the Workbench – Tracing is a system wide setting and if enabled will be in effect for all DTS files that run

How to Read Trace Files  Understand the relationship between what you can see in the Transaction Errors Report and the trace file  Open the trace file with a text editor  Use the search feature of the text editor to find what you are looking for  Understand how you can use the error message and key words to find your way around the trace file © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

Keywords in Trace Files  Resuming trace for ScribeInternal_MS  ERROR!  INSERT INTO SCRIBE.EXECUTIONLOG  UPDATE SCRIBE.EXECUTIONLOG SET "ENDTIME"  Executing step - n (source row n)  LOOKUP  User error © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

Tracing Using the Scribe Server  Enabled in Site Settings  Main trace – Captures actions from the services on the Scribe server  Message processor traces – Captures actions taken by the message processors  The Scribe services only check for tracing status on startup. Restart the services after changing trace status. © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

8 MessageProcessor Architecture

Message Processor Trace Files  MessageProcessor00 handles file, time, and query integration processes.  Message processors 01-nn handle queue integration processes.  The names of the trace files start with the main trace file name and finish with the processor number. If the name for the trace file is Trace.txt, the name of the message processor traces files are be Trace_Proc_00.txt, Trace_Proc_01.txt, Trace_Proc_02.txt, and so on. © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

Other Types of Tracing  Adapter tracing – Some adapters have additional levels of tracing that can be optionally enabled. Dynamics CRM has XML logging that you enable in the Adapter Settings window.  SQL Server tracing – If you want to get information about what is going on at the database level with SQL Server, this type of tracing can be very helpful. Note that SQL Server tracing can be verbose and can be configured with filters.  ODBC tracing – Tracing is available for some ODBC data sources. © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

Working with XML Logging in the Scribe Adapter for Dynamics CRM © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008

XML Logging Overview  Enabled in Adapter Settings  Is turned on or turned off for each DTS file  Logs requests from the adapter to the Dynamics CRM system and the responses from the CRM system as XML files  Can see additional information not in trace  There is one log file for each request and one for each response  Names of log file tells you the type of request © SCRIBE SOFTWARE CORPORATION 2008
