Airman Book Talk Conor Brokehart was born to fly. Flying was in his blood. His birth took place in a hot-air balloon that was rapidly descending due to gun shots that had punctured the balloon. Conor was also born into adventure. Set in the 1890s on the Saltee islands off the coast of Ireland, Colin learned adventure from his adored tutor Victor Vigny. Victor taught Conor martial arts, escapology, and flight, all which would be useful to Conor later in our story. When Conor witnesses the murder of the king and Victor Vigny the blame was placed on him and he is sent to the prison. His family believes he is dead while Conor believes that they have disowned him. This prison is unlike any other. The prisoners were treated horribly and exposed to awful conditions when they were sent to the diamond mines. Conor forms allies with other prisoners and dupes one guard into providing him with supplies in exchange for invention ideas the guard can claim as his own. After two years of incarceration, with enough supplies, Conor has figured an escape plan. He cannot leave the prison island on foot, or through the rough waters, his only option is to fly. On this night, one of Conor’s inventions, hydrogen balloons that explode into beautiful fireworks in the sky, were to be set off from the prison island. Conor would attach himself to the balloon, lift off into the night sky, and when he was high enough he would parachute out into freedom. “Conor flew up so fast”. ……….243 Although off to a rocky start, Conor was free. Now his plan is to build the first flying machine and move to America. However, his nemesis, and the man who killed Victor and the king is planning to murder again. Conor is now faced with the decision of leaving the country or saving his family. What will he do? Read the Airman by Eoin Colfer to follow Conor on his adventures of love, life, and flight to see what happens.
