Unit 3 Seminar

 Lab tests  Laboratory codes describe the performance of lab tests  A specimen includes:  Tissue (e.g. blood and urine)  The CPT lab tests do not include collection of the specimen used to perform the test

 Venipuncture or phlebotomy is the puncture of a vein using a needle for the purpose of drawing blood  Most common method of collecting blood specimens  Certain lab tests contain both a professional and technical component—make sure to read the code description completely

 More than one procedure  It is appropriate to separately code and report multiple pathology and laboratory procedures that are provided on the same date of service  It is NOT appropriate to report tests that are repeated simply to confirm initial results, or when a series of tests is performed—these services are considered part of the originally ordered test and are not separately reported

 Modifiers:  Do not use modifier 51 for multiple procedures  Use modifier 91 for repeated clinical diagnostic lab tests

 Code the lab test:  Urinalysis a b c d
