Can you figure out the adaptations of the following animals?

What helps this frog survive? This frog's brown and yellow coloring, as well as its rough texture, allow it to blend in with the mud and tree trunks in its environment. –This is called camouflage.

Why is this gazelle jumping? When gazelles see a predator (like a lion) in their area, they start jumping up and down 6 feet off the ground. –This is a type of alert behavior.

What is it and what is its adaptation? This duck billed platypus has webbed feet that help it maneuver well in the water.

Why do cats arch their back and puff their tail? Cats arch their back and puff their tail when they are threatened. –This is a type of Bluff Behavior.

What adaptation do these fish eggs represent? Having a large number of offspring increases the likelihood that your genes will survive.

Why is this prairie dog in a hole? When predators approach, prairie dogs are able to move to inaccessible locations.

What’s happening to this snake? Snakes shed from time to time as they outgrow their skin. –This enables them to maintain a strong, functional outer-skin layer

What the heck are these things? Sea urchins use hard spines to protect themselves from predators.

What kind of animal is this? The cheetah is the fastest animal on the planet. –Speed helps animals capture prey and avoid being eaten.

How many types of butterflies do you see? The monarch butterfly is a bad-tasting insect that most birds will not eat. The viceroy butterfly has a black-and-orange wing pattern that mimics the monarch's. –Birds who see a viceroy leave it alone, thinking it's a monarch.

What are these geese doing? This is called flocking - flying in a V to create better aerodynamics and use less energy.

What is it? What are its adaptations? Blow fish contain a poisonous toxin that can kill a predator if it is eaten. –It can also expand when in danger to avoid being eaten in the first place.

What’s the adaptation here? This conch and horseshoe crab have hard shells that offer protection from the environment and predators.

What’s the deal with this peacock’s feathers? Brightly colored circles on the peacock’s feathers are a sign of healthiness. –A female peacock is more likely to pick a male peacock with many circles as its mate.

What do you think this one’s adaptations are? Not only is this snake well camouflaged, but it contains a very deadly venom for killing its prey.

What do you think this turtle’s adaptation is? Sea turtles often give birth at the same time on a beach (synchrony). –This enables their “hatchlings” to have a higher probability of avoiding predators when they make a dash to the ocean.

All the deodorant in the world won’t help this guy... Skunk’s have the ability to spray a malodorous chemical that makes predators want to stay away.

This isn’t your ordinary seagull This albatross uses it’s giant wings to stay in the air for many months at a time.

How many bees do you see? Many harmless insects look and fly like bees (mimicry) to avoid being eaten by birds and other predators.
