Taking the Pacific Rim Dutch East India Company take most of the islands along the Pacific Rim in the early 1800s. Attempted to take agricultural products such as sugar, coffee, cocoa, and pineapples. Indonesia becomes the Dutch East Indies. Class systems are created.

British Control in Pacific Rim Took control of Singapore as a stopping point for ships on the India-China trade route. Malaysia becomes a rubber exporter. Chinese rush to the region for jobs. Native Malay population and Chinese fuel tensions.

French Indochina Napoleon III would order his armies to take much of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Forced Colonial Management. Resistance began against the French over Rice production.

Maintaining Independence Siam promoted itself as a neutral zone between imperialist ambitions of Britain and France. They escaped the racism and distrust since their own government made the changes.

US Imperialism The United States also had an imperialism policy that started after the Spanish-American War. Over time they would have influence over the Pacific Islands and Latin America.

The US and Latin America 1898, the United States joined Cuba in their war against Spain. We would receive Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Panama Canal was constructed. –Offered Colombians $10 million –When they refused we had the Panamanians revolt. Cuts a voyage from East to West in half.

Pacific Islands Phillipine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam acquired in They wanted to “educate” and “uplift” the Filipino people through Christianity. Filipino Nationalists fought with the US until Encouraged self-rule, but businessmen exploited the area.
