IoT: Manufacturing Factories of the Future Patrick Kennedy

Who We Are European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA)  Industry-led association representing private side in the ‘Factories of the Future’ public-private partnership (EC rep. public side [i.e. the EU])  150+ members from across Europe (and growing)  Members include large, small & medium industrial enterprises, research organisations, universities & industrial associations  Full time secretariat: Connecting with members, coordinating research agenda & liaising with the European Commission

Factories of the Future Manufacturing Research & Innovation  EU’s programme for manufacturing research & innovation = ‘Factories of the Future’  Budget: €1.15 billion under Horizon 2020  208 Projects launched via annual call topics  > 1,000 organisations have participated from across Europe  Includes international research & innovation cooperation  Digitisation an important part of ‘Factories of the Future’ partnership

Factories of the Future Manufacturing Research & Innovation  Strategic research agenda (‘Factories of the Future 2020’)  Identifies challenges, opportunities & technologies & enablers  Six research priority areas (domains) to address challenges using technologies & enablers identified  Annual call topics based upon strategic research agenda priorities  EFFRA assembles expert info with Commission to develop call topics  ‘Factories of the Future 2020’ = Living document & being reviewed to meet new challenges, growing priorities etc. (e.g. digitisation)

Factories of the Future 2020 Strategic Roadmap

Factories of the Future 2020 Internet of Things (IoT)  Like the Factories of the Future partnership, IoT is multi-sector issue:  Intelligent systems, intelligent products, rapid connectivity & smarter evolution of product services  Relates to all of the ‘Factories of the Future 2020’ research & innovation priorities  Preparations for IoT underway via ‘Factories of the Future projects  Expected to be an increasing feature in future ‘Factories of the Future’ call topics

Factories of the Future Project: PREVIEW

Factories of the Future Project: PREVIEW  Preview is a middleware solution that facilitates easy, ubiquitous, holistic and fast sharing of product and process information across the entire injection production process.

Factories of the Future Project: MANUTELLIGENCE  Aims to improve product & service development by connecting them together through cross-disciplinary feedback loops by means of modular collaborative secure ICT manufacturing intelligence.  Design a product from first life-cycle stage onward so it acts as an enabler for multiple services on top, to enable manufacturers to design & develop new innovative services based on their existing products, to develop new product and tailored services based on product usage information and customer’s wishes.  Product service design & manufacturing intelligence engineering platform  (Platform: Secure, cross-disciplinary & collaborative)

Factories of the Future Project: MANUTELLIGENCE

Factories of the Future Project: I-Ramp3  I-RAMP³ aims to transform conventional production equipment into Network-enabled Devices (NETDEVs)  NETDEVs = agent-based production devices equipped with standardised interfaces and standardised communication protocols  NETDEVs are able to adopt themselves to varying production setup & production conditions by negotiating with each other on optimal configuration.  Sensors & sensor grids can smoothly be integrated in the NETDEV- based manufacturing system.  This approach enables fast component integration & exchange as well as rapid adaption of the entire manufacturing system to change customer demands. Intelligent network devices for fast ramp-up

Factories of the Future Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation

Factories of the Future Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation  EFFRA is involved in Working Group 11: Manufacturing  Why?  IoT and related issues have featured in the ‘Factories of the Future’ since the beginning of the programme  EFFRA is an experienced manufacturing research & innovation community  Intention to explore how smart manufacturing meets horizontals and to develop this  Community wishes to exchange knowledge/approaches with other communities

Factories of the Future Alliance for Internet of Things Innovation  Further develop an understanding of IoT in the ‘Factories of the Future’ context  Bring together stakeholder communities  Events/Activities:  FoF ICT Info Day (1 December, Brussels) – Event focus on two IoT-related Factories of the Future call topics:  FoF (Digital Automation)  FoF (ICT Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs [I4MS phase 3])  PPP Info Day: Call details slides online  Online brokerage around call topics (note: FoF )  Industrial Technologies 2016 (Amsterdam 22 & 23 June: Discussions on IoT will feature  EFFRA community is interested in hearing views of “horizontal” stakeholders = Contact us!

Factories of the Future: Key Tool EFFRA Innovation Portal One reference resource…  Information on all ‘Factories of the Future’ projects, results & demonstrators  Project consortia information  Progress monitoring  Supporting further roadmapping
