ACT Prep: Lesson 3 Get out a piece of paper and put your name on it!

3 Ways to do Math Questions on the ACT 1.Using math (just like in math class). EVERY problem can be done this way, without using the choices. a)One mathematical way b)Another mathematical way See #25 on page 29 from the “Preparing for ACT” booklet. Put your work from this problem on your paper to turn in! You will do this for all the problems in the presentation.

2. Using multiple choice strategies (When you are stuck!) a)Estimate (Example #25) *Note: estimating will only allow you to eliminate 2 or 3 choices, pick the most reasonable) **Note: Most diagrams are drawn close to scale! 3 Ways to do Math Questions on the ACT

2. Using multiple choice strategies (When you are stuck!) b) Work backwards from the answers. Start in the middle, decide whether to move up or down. (Example #8) c) Plug in numbers (#24)

3. Guessing a)Random guessing, on average you will get 1 out of 5 correct b)Odd-man out, eliminate the answer that is clearly different (#51) 3 Ways to do Math Questions on the ACT

Assignment #3 Complete the 2 problems. Describe which of the 3 methods you used to answer the problems! SHOW WORK 1) What values of x are solutions for ? a)-4 and 2 b)-2 and 0 c)-2 and 4 d)0 and 2 e)6 and 8 2) If is true, then a = ? a)1 b) c) 7 d) 21 k. 49
