Industry Watch "SSD could ultimately replace hard disk drives." — Hu Yoshida, CTO, Hitachi Data Systems Network World, January 2010 " Google Chrome OS will not support hard- disk drives. SSDs will lead to a fast boot time." — Sundar Pichai, VP of Product Management, Google Inc. Computerworld, November 2009

Performance Improvements Technological EnhancementsBusiness Benefits  Lower total cost of ownership (TCO)  Energy and space saving  Longer battery life  Increased productivity  Higher throughput  Higher read/write performance  Lower boot/suspend time  Higher reliability  Faster access to data

HDD vs. SSD Throughput Performance  Hardware: a shelf of 3 Intel ® X25-E Extreme SATA 32 GB SSDs and 24 Seagate ® Savvio 15K SAS 73 GB HDDs. In both cases, Principled Tech. used a Newisys NDS-2240 enclosure.  Software: Jetstress; Performance results in IOPS for the two storage configurations. A higher number of IOPS is better.  Average throughput in MB per second for the two storage configurations. Higher throughput is better. Trends in Selling Prices Source: IDC, $USD / per GB HDD SSD The gap is getting closer!

More Adoptions in Different Segments Network Appliances NotebooksAll-in-One PCs Servers The most energy- intensive product

Growing Pains Among all computer products, servers are the most energy-intensive. Gartner estimates that data centers account for almost a quarter of global CO 2 emissions attributable to IT, and by itself accounts for as much CO 2 emissions as the aviation industry. Source: Gartner, 2007

Adoption Trends Data Centers The gap between the selling prices of HDDs and SSDs is narrowing, so now is the opportune time for vendors and enterprises to consider replacing HDDs with SSDs. As cloud computing and related services continue to boom at unprecedented levels, data centers will benefit from SSD technology. Cloud Computing

Enterprise Servers vs. Desktops and Notebooks Scenario Analysis

Server Power Consumption Breakdown Source: Samsung, % 46% Storages 13% Networks 8% CPUs 25%  The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) has estimated that storage now accounts for about 13% of the total power consumption of data centers. With an exponential increase in the amount of data to store, further expansion of storage systems is inevitable. As a result, the cost of electric power and cooling to maintain stored data is growing at a rate of 19% per annum.  Example: The cost of power and cooling to operate 281 PB (petabytes) of storage was $0.4 billion in In just four years, storage capacity is expected to grow to 1,773 PB (by 2011), with the company’s power and cooling costs predicted to reach $2.6 billion. Lighting/Others Electricity Transformer UPS Air Movement Cooling IT Load

 Since SSDs do not have mechanical components, they offer better power consumption and thermal performance. In contrast, HDDs require more money and electricity to cool down, so enterprises need to spend more to solve thermal issues.  Note: In the above graphs, HDD and SSD total capacity is 96 GB.  Enterprises using SSDs will cut about 50 to 60% of energy losses, thus saving energy, reducing expenses, and enabling enterprises to go green. Comparison of HDD and SSD Power Consumption in Servers Source: Principled Technologies, % higher 24 Seagate ® Savvio 15K SAS HDDs 3 Intel ® X25-E Extreme SATA SSDs Watts Active power in Watts -60% Enclosure Enclosure Drives Total: 292 Total: 116 Drives % higher 24 Seagate ® Savvio 15K SAS HDDs 3 Intel ® X25-E Extreme SATA SSDs Watts Idle power in Watts -59% Enclosure Enclosure Drives Total: 276 Total: 112 Drives 3.8

Power Consumption in PCs  Based on a comparison of a typical 2.5"HDD and SSD.  SSDs are not equipped with a motor so they consume less power than HDDs, helping to extend a computer's battery life.  The measurement conditions for the above graph were based on the assumption that the drivers are in operation 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and have the following usage details: Read operations = 15%, Write operations = 5%, Idle = 70%, Standby = 5%, Sleep cycles = 5% Source: Toshiba, 2010 Watts Per day / per week SSDs consume at least 20% less power Per weekPer dayPer hour HDD SSD Watts Per year / per 3 years Per 3 yearsPer monthPer year 2, ,000 6,000 4,000 Approx. 2700~Wh Reduction in power consumption over 3 years 1,000 5,000 7,000 9,000 3,000 HDD SSD
