Presentation transcript:

For what reasons and by what methods was Stalin able to rise to power in the USSR by 1929?

Stalin attends theological seminary influenced by Messame Dassy (MD) 1989 introduced to the ideas of Karl Marx 1899 expelled from seminary, and MD in 1901

1901 joins RSDLP Russian Socialist Democratic Labor Party and becomes professional revolutionary Led strikes and robbed banks while leaders were in exile 1902 arrested and exiled to Siberia, escaped in 1904 Exiled to Siberia from 1914-1917 (Romanov’s overthrown)

How will Stalin’s experience as a revolutionary impact his actions towards revolutionaries when he takes control of the USSR?

1917 Editorial board of Pravda Elected to Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party

Oct. Revolution 1917 Bolsheviks seized control and ousted provisional government By 1921 only the Bolshevik party was not banned (single party state was established)

1917 Stalin appointed Commissar for Nationalities believed states needed to be ruled by a strong center and held there with strict discipline (Lenin wanted autonomous states)

1922 Appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party Member of Politburo Ogburo and Secretariat

Method 1 Lenin & Stalin 1918 assassination attempt effects Lenin’s health 1921 Lenin’s NEP replaced War Communism (grain requisitioning) Trotsky strongly opposed 1922 & 23 debilitating strokes

1921 the 10th Party Congress passed the Resolution on Party Unity or ‘Ban on factions’

1922-1923 Lenin wrote his Testament

1922-23 The Scissor Crisis

1924 Lenin died, party was divided between NEP supporters & opponents Lenin’s Testament was not read at the 12th Party Congress in 1924

Stalin made it look like he was Lenin’s besty and gave Trotsky the wrong date for the funeral so he went on vacation to Sukhumi

-Lenin Enrollment -Stalin controlled who was voted into the Central Committee -Required reading for new members; The Foundations of Leninism

Method 2 Removal of Rivals Trotsky would’ve been the likely successor but . . . Jewish didn’t want to fight for it not close with Politburo members attacked NEP supported Permanent Revolution

Party is split by the NEP First I destroy the left. I don’t like NEP. NEP Non-Supporters NEP Supporters Trotsky Kamenev Zinoviev Stalin joins Kamenev & Zinoviev to create the Troika Bukharin Rykov Tomsky

Stalin isolates Trotsky 13th Congress of Soviets 1924 vote on NEP, Socialism in One Country vs. Permanent Revolution Stalin, Kamenev and Zinoviev agree to work together in Politburo None want Trotsky to take leadership Trotsky gives brilliantly stirring speeches calling for the end of the NEP and the beginning of a Permanent Revolution Rightists happy to support centralist Troika over Left Wing Trotsky Trotsky threatened with the charge of ‘Factionalism’ if he does not accept the will of the party!

The Left self-destructs Zinoviev and Kamenev turn on Trotsky questioning his Bolshevik credentials Trotsky publishes ‘Lessons of October’ which criticises Zinoviev and Kamenev’s conservatism during the Revolution Stalin stays in background allowing left to tear itself to pieces Zinoviev and Kamenev happy to allow Stalin to continue to appoint delegates to further alienate their enemy ‘Trotsky’ By 1925 he Trotsky no longer a potential party leader

Party is split by the NEP First I destroy the left. Still don’t like NEP NEP Non-Supporters NEP Supporters Trotsky Kamenev Zinoviev Stalin joins Kamenev & Zinoviev to create the Troika Bukharin Rykov Tomsky

14th Party Congress 1925 Kamenev attacked NEP & Stalin’s Socialism in One Country Stalin decides to support the NEP Politburo increased to 9 (Molotov, Kalinin & Voroshilov were added) Kamenev was voted out

Party is split by the NEP First I destroy the left. Now I like NEP NEP Non-Supporters NEP Supporters Trotsky Kamenev Zinoviev Bukharin Rykov Tomsky

-1926 Kamenev, Zinoviev & Trotsky create the United Opposition -Stalin labelled them factionalists -Trotsky exiled to Kazakhstan Kamenev & Zinoviev begged for forgiveness and were let back into the party

Party is split by the NEP Then I destroy the right! No more NEP NEP Non-Supporters NEP Supporters Trotsky Kamenev Zinoviev Bukharin Rykov Tomsky

-1927 the War Scare leads to grain hoarding, Stalin no longer supports NEP and starts grain requisitioning in 1928. 6/9 Politburo members owe their positions to Stalin. -1929 Bukharin, Rykov, and Tomsky (NEP supporters) were voted out of Politburo easily (5 members owe position to Stalin)

Party is split by the NEP Then I destroy the right! No more NEP NEP Non-Supporters NEP Supporters Trotsky Kamenev Zinoviev Bukharin Rykov Tomsky
