GREEK TRADITIONAL COSTUMES

Every Greek local costume is a set of clothing featuring the traditions of a group of people living in the local area. The traditional costume presents an impressive diversity. The sartorial peculiarities of each costume, differentiate and emphasize the character of the social group from which it originates.

TRADITIONAL COSTUMES OF THRACE

TRADITIONAL WOMEN'S COSTUME OF THRACE (VYZACHTRA) It is made up of an embroidered shirt, a sleeveless embroidered felt dress, a felt apron decorated with embroidery and colored stripes and a printed headscarf.

THE TRADITIONAL WOMEN'S COSTUME OF KAVAKLI -THRAKE The female costume “Tsoukna” of Kavakli is an elegant one with rich ornaments. It consists of a cotton shirt, with darker blue sleeves and silk-threaded embroidery on the sleeves and the hem, of a striped colorful belt which is folded sideways so that it becomes double and of the “pitsirka”, a woven apron tied over the belt. “Pitsirka” is one of the best examples of textile art in Greece. During winter, the long-sleeved “Sigouna” was worn over the Tsoukna.

THE WOMEN'S COSTUME IN METAXADES -THRAKE The prevalent characteristic of these costumes is the black dress with the orange bands on the chest and the two openings, the “kourflithres”, which enabled women to breastfeed.

MALE COSTUME OF THRACE All Thracians wore the “Potouria” , a kind of baggy trousers worn only in Thrace. It was woolen and there were two colors: the brown for the everyday attire and the black for formal occasions. The summer “potouria” was cotton and had blue color. The cotton shirt was white and had either embroidery on the neck or it was brown with white stripes. They wore sleeveless vests over the shirts. There were also, short-sleeved coats, black or brown, called “tzamantani”. In cold winter days the men wore a fur, a type of coat with a fur lining on the inside part (fleece). The costume was completed by the “tsourapia” (knitted shoes) for everyday use or the “kountouria” for formal occasions, the long woolen girdle around the waist and the “kalpaki” on the head.

MALE PONTUS COSTUME: It consisted of black baggy trousers “Vraka” , a shirt in various colors, a vest, a belt in various colors and a paslouk on the head.

PONTUS FEMALE COSTUME The female costume includes: Tapla: a round cap for the head with embroidery and decorated with coins Kamis: a white shirt Salvari: Long, cotton or woolen knickers Zipouni: Long, cotton or woolen dress, which was open on the chest and tied in the waist. Its two front leaves were cross-tied and there was an opening high, on the side allowing the salvari to be shown. Katifes: a short jacket felt or velvet-made, which was worn over the zipouni. Lachori or Zonari: a belt made of local thick fabric. The handmade woven “kaltzai” were worn on the feet and woven white or colored gloves on the hands. PONTUS FEMALE COSTUME

MACEDONIAN FEMALE COSTUME OF NAOUSA (EPISKOPI) This costume consists of: -A long shirt made of whitened cotton fabric with woven drawing on the hem and on the sleeves. -A sleeveless one-piece dress, brown, black or cherry-colored, embroidered on the hem and a bit on the collar. The embroideries depicted patterns of trees, dolls or snails (saligkaria), so this embroidery was named “saliagko”. -The totally red dress was worn when the girl reached the marital age (15-16 years old). -A wooly wide belt, which was usually worn as a sign of engagement. -Terlik: a long wooly coat and the most impressive part of the costume. EPIRUS

THE TRADITIONAL FEMALE COSTUME OF EPIRUS(SARAKATSANA) The female Epirus costume comprises: Katasarki , worn straight over the skin. It’s white and woolen.. A Shirt, white and with woven cotton sleeves without any embroidery. Zostari, a kind of vest. The Skirt, to the length of the calves. The Socks, woven and with geometric designs, worn on the feet. The “Gkouzoki”, an overcoat or cape. It is sleeveless, woven with two decorative sleeves thrown at the back. The Sleeves, knitted with the same pattern of the socks The Handkerchief, with black edges all around.

THE TRADITIONAL MALE COSTUME OF EPIRUS: THE BOURAZANA It consists of: -The pants, which are usually beige or white and made of a thick fabric (felt). They are known as “bourazana” or “vrakopantelono”. -The cotton shirt, in white or other shades of white. It might be narrow or wide-sleeved, according to the area. -The sleeveless vest, made of wool and of a dark color. Essential parts of the costume are the belts, a plain or colorful cloth tucked around the waist, the furry “kalpaki” for the head and the “tsarouchia” or plain black shoes, depending on the region.

WOMEN TRADITIONAL COSTUME OF THESSALIA(KARAGOUNA) The female costume consists of: a shirt with linen sleeves, with thick black fringe on the hem and on the sleeves, double sayas and two cotton dresses.

WOMEN TRADITIONAL COSTUME OF THESSALIA(PILIO) The female costume consists of: A white shirt with embroidery A sleeveless one-piece dress usually cherry-colored ‘Kontogouni’ a short black velvet vest with embroidery.

MEN’S TRADITIONAL COSTUME OF THESSALIA(PILIO) It comprises: - A white, cotton shirt Woolen pants (vraki or panovraki). -A woolen or satin girdle. -A vest. -Α black “kalpaki” on the head (bonnets)

CENTRAL GREECE

THE TRADITIONAL MALE COSTUME OF MAINLAND AND PELOPONNESE A rich “foustanela” (pleated white male skirt) can have up to 400 pleats (lagkiolia) and may need a roll of fabric to be woven. The “foustanela” is particularly impressive while dancing because it emphasizes the turns and the leaps. The “foustanela” was a traditional garment of men, especially in rural areas .

THE OFFICIAL COSTUME OF WOMEN IN CENTRAL CREECE(ROUMELI) This female costume consists of : - A white dress, embroidered on the hem and the sleeves -Segouni a sleeveless coat with embroidery - A woven apron - The Handkerchief

THE OFFICIAL COSTUME OF WOMEN IN PELOPONNESE of Queen Amalia This female costume consists of a gossamer silk shirt with fine gold embroidery, a precious pleated silk dress with wide sleeves in a variety of colors, and a velvet short jacket, all trimmed with gold braid and embroidery. The costume is completed with a red fez, and silk tassel. The neck and chest are decorated with rows of pearls and a precious brooch.
