Traditional Cretan Dances

Siganos The siganos(=the slow one) was named like that because it is the slowest dance and has the most simple steps of all dances. It is danced by men and women to the melody of a lyra and lute.

Syrtos or Chaniotikos Syrtos is the most well- known dance in Crete. It is danced in a circle, by men and women and consists of 12 steps. It is called Syrtos (‘serno’ means drag) beacause you almost drag your feet in the steps. It originally started in Chania.

Pedozali This dance represents Cretan bravery during the war. It is named after the number of steps (pedo=five). It is danced either by women and men together or men by themselves, in a circle with each others arms stretched out on shoulders.

Sousta This dance differs greatly from the rest of the Cretan dances. It is danced in pairs (one woman and one man). It has less steps and more swinging of the body. This dance symbolizes love and romance.

Maleviziotis or Pidixtos Pidixtos (pidao=jump). This dance is the livliest, fastest and most dynamic and enthusiastic dance of Crete. It is usually danced by men only in a circle. It consists of 16 steps- some of which involve really high jumps.
