Purpose This lesson will discuss the U.S. actions to thwart Communism in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam.

1. Demonstrate the cause and effect relationship between events in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam 2. Explain the impact of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on U.S. presence in Vietnam 3. Show the effect of protests at home on the conduct of the war in Vietnam

During the Cold War, the Domino Theory was based on the thinking that if Communism took hold in one Southeast Asian country, it would spill over into the next. Like dominoes, neighboring countries, one by one would fall.

 Constitutionally elected government of Juan Bosch was overthrown by Donald Reid Cabral.  When Bosch forces tried to take back the government the Marines were called in to evacuate U.S. and other foreign nationals.  The U.S. military established a safety zone to separate warring forces and fought the rebels until peace was restored.

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, for the use of conventional military force in Southeast Asia.

 Anti-war protests abounded in the U.S.  President Nixon was elected after promising to end the war.  His plan, called Vietnamization, was designed to turn conduct of the war over to the army of South Vietnam.
