Plus/Delta Plus More time in whole group discussion Small group debrief of readings Real world example Culture Clash case Lots of food Delta Needed more time for case analysis Preferred doing role plays Time to share strategies that work Unit reflections – can we discuss and then summarize?

Learning Targets I can identify divergent views of my peers about data use in schools. I can apply the Data Wise Practices to assess data use systems at my practicum site. I can understand the benefits of different kinds of data displays to tell a particular story.

Agenda Agenda & Sharing Continuum protocol Self-assessment of Data Wise Practices Consultancies Data Display Workshop Preview Next Class Plus/Delta

Continuum Protocol

Continuum Protocol Teachers’ informal knowledge and assessment of student learning is the most reliable means of measuring student growth and should play the largest role in assessing students. Formal, standardized assessment of student learning is the most reliable means of measuring student growth and should play the largest role in assessing students.

Continuum Protocol If the test is a good test, then teaching to the test is just good teaching. Teaching to the test is detrimental to student learning.

Continuum Protocol Regular assessment ensures that English Language Learners are not left behind in the teaching of content and English. Regular assessment is an impediment to ensuring that English Language Learners learn content area material and English.

Continuum Protocol Student achievement data is a good indicator of teacher quality. Student achievement data doesn’t reflect teaching quality.

Continuum follow-up What can you learn from data? What can’t you learn…?  So what are the leadership implications? In what ways can data be useful in schools? …be misused in schools?  So what are the leadership implications? In what ways can data be used to combat inequities? …reinforce inequities?  So what are the leadership implications?

Data Wise Improvement Process

Data Wise Self-Assessment: Focus on Organizing for Collaborative Work Identify 1-2 supporting practices in place & going well at your practicum. Identify 1-2 supporting practices that, if implemented or improved, would increase adult and student learning at your practicum.

Data Wise Self-Assessment (2 min each) Share a practice already in place (2 min each) Share a practice that, if implemented or improved, would increase adult & student learning Identify volunteer for consultancy (5 min) Reflect/Journal: What are high leverage next steps for practicum site? What would you do to improve how school is organized for collaborative work? Consultancy with colleagues

Data Display Workshop Groups of 4 (20 min) Choose 1-2 of the displays in the packet to examine Follow the prompts Split into partners (5 min each) Share PAL 1 data How would you (or did you) tell a story with this data?

Preview next class 11/11 – no class at HGSE 11/18 Volunteers to share action planning process next class? Opportunity to think through assignment #2 Sarah’s goal = return papers (all at same time) by 11/18 Remember: Make-up class on December 3rd, 5-8pm

Resources Incredibly valuable resources:

Practicum logs A few words about practicum logs… Expect coach comments on practicum logs (only) Coaches submit reports 3x/year to Lee & Sarah F about each student’s practicum logs. Part of your grade in T330. Put effort in the right places! (see samples)
